Paint, Powder & Water: 2015 St. Maarten J’ouvert Morning with Splash
Before Project X Fete took over Carnival Village later that night, April 27, 2015 began on the road at St. Maarten J’ouvert.
For Julianspromos, it was an especially important morning. The trip marked the platform’s first-ever time in St. Maarten, making this footage part of the beginning of Julianspromos’ history on the island.
Julianspromos joined Splash J’ouvert Band for the morning jump-up, capturing a road experience filled with paint, powder, water, smoke, drinks and nonstop energy, along with performances from Asa Bantan, Red Eye Crew, King Vers and more.
On the Road with Splash J’ouvert Band
St. Maarten’s J’ouvert Morning took place on Monday, April 27, 2015, during the island’s Carnival celebrations. Contemporary local coverage confirms that J’ouvert bands were preparing for the road that morning as part of the 2015 Carnival season.
Julianspromos experienced the celebration with Splash J’ouvert Band, documenting the kind of organized chaos that defines J’ouvert.
There was paint.
There was powder.
There was water.
And there was plenty of it.
Splash took things even further with a water truck, pool truck, smoke bombs, drinks and other road elements, turning the morning into a moving Carnival party.
The surviving footage gives viewers a close-up look at what it felt like to be inside the band rather than simply watching from the sidelines.

Music and live performances were a major part of the morning.
The Julianspromos footage captures Asa Bantan, Red Eye Crew, King Vers and more, adding another layer to the road experience.
Asa Bantan’s presence is especially notable because he would also appear later that same day in Julianspromos’ surviving coverage of Project X Fete.
That gives the April 27 archive a natural connection between two very different sides of St. Maarten Carnival: the raw early-morning energy of J’ouvert and the large concert atmosphere of Project X later that night.
Julianspromos’ First J’ouvert in St. Maarten
The footage also documents another company milestone.
Because this was Julianspromos’ first-ever trip to St. Maarten, it was also the platform’s first opportunity to experience and document St. Maarten J’ouvert.
By 2015, Julianspromos had already covered Carnival celebrations in multiple destinations outside New York, but every new market added something different to the growing archive.
St. Maarten immediately delivered two very different experiences on the same day.
The morning began on the road with paint, powder and water.
By nightfall, Julianspromos would be inside Carnival Village documenting Project X Fete with Future, Asa Bantan, King Vers and more.

From J’ouvert Morning to Project X Night
That connection is what makes April 27, 2015 particularly interesting within the Julianspromos archive.
Rather than capturing only one event during the first St. Maarten trip, Julianspromos documented different parts of the Carnival experience across the same day.
Splash J’ouvert Band represented the road.
Project X represented the stage.
One was built around paint, powder, water and people moving through the streets. The other brought Caribbean and international performers together inside Carnival Village.
Seen together, they provide a much fuller picture of Julianspromos’ first St. Maarten Carnival experience.

The YouTube video followed on April 30, 2015, preserving the Splash J’ouvert Band experience and the performances from the morning for a wider audience.
More than a decade later, the footage now serves a different purpose.
It is not only a Carnival highlight reel. It is a record of Julianspromos experiencing St. Maarten J’ouvert for the first time, capturing one morning within a much larger period of Caribbean expansion for the platform.
