2015 St Maarten Carnival Jouvert Highlights
St. Maarten Carnival J’Ouvert 2015 Highlights
Julianspromos was on the road in St. Maarten for Carnival J’Ouvert Morning 2015, capturing the early-morning energy, music, paint and revelry of one of the island’s signature Carnival traditions.
The official J’Ouvert Jump-Up took place in the early hours of Monday, April 27, 2015, as revelers took to the streets for hours of Soca, dancing and Carnival celebration.
For the 2015 experience, Julianspromos joined Splash J’Ouvert Band, documenting the action from inside the road experience as the band brought together paint, powder, water, music and thousands of moments of pure Carnival energy.
On the Road With Splash J’Ouvert Band
Splash J’Ouvert Band delivered exactly what its name promised, combining traditional J’Ouvert elements with a high-energy road experience featuring paint, powder, a water truck, pool truck, smoke effects, drinks and Soca music.
Julianspromos captured revelers moving through the streets as morning broke over St. Maarten, preserving the atmosphere of J’Ouvert from within the celebration.
Performances during the road experience included Asa Banton, Red Eye Crew, King Vers and other entertainers, adding live energy to the music trucks and crowds accompanying the band.
J’Ouvert Morning in St. Maarten
J’Ouvert is one of the defining road traditions of St. Maarten Carnival, beginning before sunrise and carrying revelers through Philipsburg with music, dancing and bands moving through the streets.
The 2015 J’Ouvert took place during a packed Carnival season that included pageants, Calypso competitions, international concerts, jump-ups and the Grand Carnival Parade.
At the center of the celebration was Carnival Village, the main hub for performances, food and entertainment throughout the season, while J’Ouvert brought the Carnival experience directly onto the road.
Soca, Paint and Caribbean Carnival Culture
The combination of paint, powder, water and Soca gives J’Ouvert a character distinctly different from the elaborate costumes of the main Carnival parade.
Rather than watching from the sidelines, participants become part of the celebration itself, moving behind music trucks and bands as the streets transform into an early-morning Carnival party.
The 2015 footage gives viewers a look back at that experience through original Julianspromos coverage from one of the company’s international Carnival stops.
Original Julianspromos Coverage
St. Maarten formed part of Julianspromos’ expanding multimedia Carnival coverage during 2015, a year in which the company documented Carnival culture across numerous destinations in the Caribbean and its international diaspora.
The J’Ouvert footage with Splash J’Ouvert Band preserved not only a Carnival event, but also the artists, bands and road traditions that shaped St. Maarten Carnival during that period.
