Cayman Carnival Batabano 2015: On the Road With Swanky International
Grand Cayman came alive with colour on Saturday, May 2, 2015, as Cayman Carnival Batabano sent masqueraders, music trucks and Soca onto the road for its annual adult street parade.
For 2015, Swanky International presented “Kaleidoscope — Out of Many Colours,” filling the route with bright costumes, feathers and a mix of masqueraders from Cayman and abroad.
Julianspromos joined Swanky on the road, with Intrigue Lane hosting the coverage and Julian C. Hackett filming and editing.
Carnival Weekend Comes to Grand Cayman
Batabano was the centerpiece of a wider Carnival period that stretched across the final days of April and into the first weekend of May.
The 2015 promotional campaign invited both residents and visitors to take part in the island’s Carnival celebrations, from fetes and shows to the main adult road parade.
By Saturday, the focus shifted fully to mas.
Costumes came out.
Music trucks hit the road.
And Grand Cayman moved into Carnival mode.
Swanky International Presents “Kaleidoscope”
For its 2015 presentation, Swanky International went with a theme that fit the road perfectly:
Kaleidoscope — Out of Many Colours
The name reflected exactly what surrounded the band.
Bright feathers.
Jewelled costumes.
Multiple sections.
And a road full of colour moving through Grand Cayman.
Swanky had become one of Cayman’s recognizable Carnival bands by this point, and Kaleidoscope gave the group another chance to build a full road experience around costume, music and movement.
Bringing Masqueraders to Cayman
Swanky was also promoting Batabano beyond the Cayman Islands.
One of its 2015 travel campaigns offered a Carnival package beginning at US$949 per person, combining the road experience with travel and accommodation.
The advertisement promoted airfare options from Miami, Tampa, Kingston and JFK, together with accommodation, costume, airport transfers, fetes and a Swanky welcome package.
It showed that Batabano was not being marketed only as a local street parade.
Visitors could come to Grand Cayman, enjoy the beach, attend the fetes, put on a costume and become part of the Carnival themselves.
Batabano Takes Over the Road
The adult parade began around the Public Beach / Seven Mile Beach area before continuing along West Bay Road toward George Town.
That route gave Batabano a setting unlike many other Caribbean Carnivals.
Masqueraders could be moving past the resorts and coastline of Seven Mile Beach one moment, then heading toward the streets of George Town surrounded by music and spectators the next.
Thousands of people came out along the route as the bands moved through the island.
Kaleidoscope Comes to Life
A Carnival theme can look impressive on a flyer.
The road is where it has to come alive.
Once Swanky’s masqueraders were assembled, Kaleidoscope became a moving display of colour.
Feathers rose above the crowd.
Costume sections blended into each other.
Music trucks pushed the band forward.
And the road became less about individual costumes and more about the full visual experience.
For anyone watching from the side, it was a parade.
For the people inside the band, it was mas.
Intrigue Lane on the Road With Swanky
Intrigue Lane hosted the Julianspromos coverage from within the Carnival experience, moving among Swanky masqueraders rather than presenting from outside the parade.
That put viewers closer to the costumes, music and personalities that made up Batabano 2015.
Julian C. Hackett followed the action with the camera, capturing the band as it moved through Grand Cayman.

Why Is It Called Batabano?
The name Batabano has a distinctly Caymanian meaning.
It refers to the tracks left in the sand by sea turtles when they come ashore to nest.
That connection gives the Carnival a name rooted in the islands themselves rather than borrowed from another celebration.
Over the years, Batabano developed into one of Cayman’s major annual cultural events, combining Caribbean-style mas and Soca with the island’s own setting and community.
A Carnival Built Around Many Cultures
Swanky’s “Out of Many Colours” theme also suited Grand Cayman.
The Cayman Islands are home to people from across the Caribbean and around the world, and Batabano brings many of those communities together on the same road.
Different backgrounds.
Different accents.
Different costume sections.
One Carnival.
That mix is part of what gives Batabano its own character among Caribbean Carnival celebrations.
From the Julianspromos Archives
The 2015 Batabano trip marked Julianspromos’ first-ever trip to the Cayman Islands.
By then, the brand had already documented Caribbean events across New York, Miami, Washington, Toronto, Jamaica and, just days earlier, St. Maarten.
Grand Cayman added another destination to that growing story.
And the first Cayman assignment was not spent watching Carnival from a distance.
Intrigue Lane was on the road with Swanky International, experiencing Batabano alongside the masqueraders.
Julian C. Hackett was moving with the band, filming the costumes, road energy and people around them before later editing the footage into the Julianspromos highlights.
The timing also made the Cayman trip part of an especially active stretch in 2015.
Earlier in April, Julianspromos had documented Jamaica Carnival.
At the end of April came the brand’s first trip to St. Maarten, including J’Ouvert and Project X Fete.
Then, only days later, the cameras arrived in the Cayman Islands for Batabano.
Each destination had its own feel.
Jamaica had its Kingston road culture.
St. Maarten brought J’Ouvert and Carnival Village.
Grand Cayman had Seven Mile Beach, Batabano and Swanky’s colourful Kaleidoscope presentation.
On May 2, 2015, that became the beginning of the Cayman Islands chapter in the Julianspromos archive.
