Cayman Carnival Batabano 2015 Highlights
Julianspromos traveled to Grand Cayman in May 2015 to capture the color, music and energy of Cayman Carnival Batabano, the national Carnival celebration of the Cayman Islands.
The main adult parade took place on Saturday, May 2, 2015, bringing thousands of masqueraders and spectators together along Grand Cayman’s famous Seven Mile Beach corridor and into George Town.
For the 2015 road experience, Julianspromos joined Swanky International, with Julian Hackett shooting and editing the original coverage and Intrigue Lane representing Julianspromos as host.
On the Road With Swanky International
Swanky International brought its colorful “Kaleidoscope... Out of Many Colors” presentation to Batabano 2015, filling the road with vibrant costumes, feathers and the energy of Soca.
Julianspromos captured the experience from within the celebration, following Swanky International as masqueraders made their way through Grand Cayman during one of the island’s biggest cultural events.
With Intrigue Lane hosting from the road and Julian behind the camera, the coverage gave Julianspromos viewers a firsthand look at Cayman Carnival rather than simply documenting the parade from the sidelines.
Batabano Takes Over Grand Cayman
The 2015 adult parade began near Public Beach on Seven Mile Beach and traveled along West Bay Road before finishing in George Town on Harbour Drive.
Thousands of spectators lined the route as masquerade bands moved through the streets accompanied by trucks filled with Soca and Calypso music.
The colorful parade featured elaborate costumes, large feathered headdresses and backpieces in bright Caribbean colors, creating a moving celebration of music, mas and Caymanian culture.
A Weekend of Soca and Carnival
Batabano 2015 extended beyond the road parade.
The Carnival weekend also included live entertainment, parties and cultural activities throughout Grand Cayman. On the evening before the main parade, Machel Montano and his band performed at Festival Green in Camana Bay, with Angela Hunte joining him during the show.
The combination of international Soca talent, local culture and thousands of Carnival participants reflected Batabano’s growing role on the regional Carnival calendar.
The History Behind Batabano
Cayman Carnival Batabano was established in 1983 by the Rotary Club of Grand Cayman and has grown into the Cayman Islands’ national Carnival celebration.
The name “Batabano” comes from Cayman’s turtling heritage and refers to the tracks left in the sand when sea turtles come ashore to nest.
Held around the beginning of turtle nesting season, the Carnival developed from a smaller local parade into an international celebration incorporating mas, Soca, Calypso, costumes, food and Caribbean culture.

The Cayman Islands trip formed part of an important period in Julianspromos’ international multimedia expansion.
During 2015, the Julianspromos team traveled across multiple Carnival destinations documenting the culture through original video, photography and on-the-ground hosting.
