How Julianspromos Began
What started as a passion for music and digital promotion grew into a platform that would spend nearly two decades helping document and promote Caribbean culture.
Julianspromos traces its roots to 2007, during a very different era of online music discovery. Long before social media became the center of music promotion, the goal was already simple: help people discover music, connect artists with wider audiences, and create opportunities for Caribbean entertainment to travel beyond its immediate community.
In those early years, the focus was primarily on digital music promotion and discovery. As the internet changed the way audiences found new artists and songs, the platform evolved with it, building an audience around Caribbean music while developing relationships with artists, DJs, promoters, media outlets and entertainment professionals.
By 2010, Julianspromos had developed into a distinct Caribbean music and entertainment brand, creating the foundation for the multimedia expansion that would follow.
What began online eventually moved into the real world. Julianspromos expanded from promoting music to interviews, event coverage, video production, photography and original media content, creating a permanent visual record of artists, events and moments within Caribbean culture.
That transition became an important turning point for the company. Rather than simply helping promote what was happening, Julianspromos began documenting it firsthand.
The early years were built without the resources of a traditional media company. Much of the growth came through persistence, relationships, volunteer work and simply showing up when opportunities presented themselves. Those experiences helped shape the hands-on approach that continues to define Julianspromos today.
From an independent digital promotion platform to a Caribbean music and media brand reaching audiences around the world, the foundation has remained the same: support the music, amplify the people behind it, and preserve the culture as it happens.
From Promotion to Media
The period when Julianspromos stepped beyond online promotion and began documenting Caribbean entertainment firsthand.
By 2010, Julianspromos was beginning to evolve beyond digital music promotion. What had started online was now moving directly into the spaces where Caribbean music and culture were happening.
A major early breakthrough came in 2011, when Julianspromos interviewed Kes the Band during the group’s New York appearance surrounding the success of “Wotless.” The interview became Julianspromos’ first major artist interview and helped mark the beginning of the platform’s transition into original Caribbean media coverage.
That transition continued on July 9, 2011, when Julianspromos covered TEMPO Turns 6 at Six Flags Great Adventure. Julian Hackett and Sheniele “Vivaa” Dodson volunteered for the opportunity and traveled to Six Flags by bus, working without a media budget or income behind the operation.
Those early experiences opened a new chapter for Julianspromos. The platform was no longer only helping audiences discover music online. It was beginning to interview artists, capture performances, cover events and create original video content from within Caribbean entertainment itself.
Those opportunities helped establish the foundation for what would become an extensive archive of interviews, performances, festivals, Carnival events and cultural moments. Julianspromos had begun its transition from a digital promotional platform into a Caribbean media brand documenting the culture as it happened.
The Early Coverage Years
From first interviews to festivals, showcases and Carnival events, Julianspromos quickly began building a growing visual record of Caribbean entertainment.
Following its move into original media coverage in 2011, Julianspromos continued expanding throughout the early 2010s. Interviews, performances, photography and event coverage became a larger part of the platform, creating opportunities to document artists and cultural moments both inside and outside of New York.
In 2012, that growth included Jammin’ in the Park in Washington, DC, where Sharifa “Rifa Madness” Nero collaborated with Julianspromos and conducted interviews with Destra Garcia and Kes the Band. Later that year, Julianspromos traveled to Miami Carnival for its first Carnival road experience outside New York, marking an important early step in the company’s expansion beyond the New York City market.
The momentum continued in 2013. Julianspromos documented events including the GBM Showcase in New York, with media coverage by Chandelle “Chandy” De Riggs and Intrigue, while Canboulay New York 2013 became one of the stronger examples of the platform’s developing multimedia approach, combining original video coverage with an extensive photo archive. That same year, Julianspromos also documented Canboulay during Miami Carnival J’Ouvert, further expanding its presence across Carnival markets.
By 2014, the Julianspromos footprint was stretching farther into the Caribbean diaspora. Coverage in Toronto included events such as SOS Fest Toronto and Jab Jab J’Ouvert, while the wider multimedia operation continued documenting Caribbean entertainment across multiple cities and islands.
These years became an important period of growth for Julianspromos. What had started as individual opportunities to capture interviews and events was becoming a consistent multimedia operation, supported by a developing team, an expanding industry network and an archive preserving an increasingly broad story of Soca, Carnival and Caribbean culture.

Growing With Soca
As Soca expanded online, Julianspromos grew with it, helping Caribbean music, artists and Carnival culture reach audiences far beyond the region.
The rise of YouTube, social media and streaming transformed the way Caribbean music traveled. Songs that once depended heavily on radio, physical distribution and Carnival-season promotion could suddenly reach listeners around the world within hours. Julianspromos continued evolving alongside that shift.
Soca became an increasingly important part of the platform’s identity. Alongside its multimedia coverage, Julianspromos developed into a destination for new Soca music, official music videos, artist discovery, Carnival releases and Caribbean entertainment content. As audiences moved online, the platform created another pathway for artists to connect with listeners across the Caribbean and throughout the international diaspora.
YouTube became especially important to that growth. Through years of consistently publishing, curating and promoting Caribbean music and video content, JulianspromosTV grew to more than 1.36 million subscribers, becoming one of the most recognizable parts of the Julianspromos brand.
At the same time, Julianspromos continued building relationships with artists, producers, DJs, promoters, media outlets and entertainment professionals. That combination of digital reach, industry relationships and direct access to an international audience allowed the company to move beyond documenting Caribbean entertainment and become an active part of how new music was introduced, promoted and discovered.
The technology has changed considerably since the early days of Julianspromos, but the purpose has remained remarkably consistent: find the music, support the artists, connect it with an audience and help Soca travel farther.
