Long Day Jouvert Goes Coo Coo for Cocoa: New York 2013 Highlights

Back 2 Basics at Long Day Jouvert Goes Coo Coo for Cocoa during New York Carnival weekend in Brooklyn, August 31, 2013.

On Saturday, August 31, 2013, Back2Basics Ent and THC Promotions presented Long Day Jouvert Goes Coo Coo for Cocoa at Volume 2 in Brooklyn as New York Labor Day Weekend moved into full swing.

Running from 10 AM to 4 PM at 115 Veronica Place, the daytime fete stood out with its cocoa-themed identity and its place within the wider Carnival weekend schedule. The original artwork promoted Long Day as the “Official Afterparty for All Boatrides,” offering a discount to patrons arriving with a boat-ride ticket stub.

Julianspromos was there with Sheniele “Vivaa” Dodson leading the on-camera coverage. Chandelle “Chandy” De Riggs shot the footage, while Julian C. Hackett edited the highlights, which were uploaded on September 2, 2013.

Long Day at Volume 2

Long Day took place at Volume 2, 115 Veronica Place, Brooklyn, New York 11226, with its 10 AM start giving the fete an early place in the packed Saturday schedule surrounding New York Carnival.

The timing was part of the event’s identity. Rather than waiting until night, Long Day was already underway while boat rides and other Labor Day Weekend activities were moving across New York.

Its promoters connected those experiences directly. The event artwork billed Long Day as the official afterparty for all boat rides and advertised a discount with a ticket stub, showing how one Carnival weekend event could feed naturally into the next.

Goes Coo Coo for Cocoa

The full 2013 event name was Long Day Jouvert Goes Coo Coo for Cocoa, and the artwork leaned heavily into that theme.

Chocolate, cereal and milk imagery surrounded the Long Day branding, creating a visual identity that was immediately different from the many other fetes taking place that weekend.

The flyer advertised “DJs ‘Maximum’ Back2Basics + Surprises,” putting the emphasis on the DJs and party experience rather than presenting a traditional live-artist concert bill.

From the Boat Rides to Long Day

New York Carnival weekend has always extended far beyond the Labor Day parade.

Boat rides, fetes, J’Ouvert events, steelpan gatherings, concerts and parties create a wider weekend of Caribbean entertainment throughout the city.

Long Day’s original promotion gives a particularly clear look at how those events connected in 2013.

By targeting patrons coming directly from boat rides, offering a ticket-stub discount and running through the afternoon, Long Day positioned itself as another stop in a weekend that could move almost continuously from one Caribbean event to another.

Together with the video and original event artwork, the gallery provides a broader visual record of Long Day Jouvert Goes Coo Coo for Cocoa on August 31, 2013.

Why Long Day Stood Out

Long Day combined several details that gave it a distinct identity during an already crowded New York Carnival weekend.

Its 10 AM start, memorable cocoa theme and direct connection to the boat-ride crowd separated it from many of the nighttime fetes competing for attention.

The original flyer also placed the party itself at the center of the promotion. Instead of building the event around a list of headline performers, it emphasized DJs, surprises and the experience of continuing Carnival Saturday at Volume 2.

More than a decade later, the video, photographs and artwork preserve not only the event but also the way New York’s Caribbean party circuit operated during Labor Day Weekend in 2013.

From the Julianspromos Archives

For Julianspromos, Long Day also preserves another chapter in the platform’s early New York event coverage.

Sheniele “Vivaa” Dodson hosted the coverage, bringing viewers into the fete on camera. Chandelle “Chandy” De Riggs filmed the event, capturing the crowd and atmosphere, while Julian C. Hackett edited the footage for release.

The video was uploaded on September 2, 2013, two days after the event.

Together, the original footage, photographs and event artwork preserve Long Day Jouvert Goes Coo Coo for Cocoa as it unfolded during New York Carnival weekend — another snapshot of Brooklyn, Soca and Caribbean culture through the Julianspromos lens.
