Julianspromos 2011 Media Archive

2012: From New York to a Wider Caribbean Circuit

The year Julianspromos moved deeper into original Caribbean media through artist interviews, live event coverage, Carnival documentation and its first major steps beyond New York.

2011 was a formative year in the development of Julianspromos. What had begun as online music promotion and early event documentation was becoming a more structured Caribbean media operation built around interviews, hosted coverage, photography and original video.

The year produced several important firsts: the first Julianspromos artist interview, Chandelle “Chandy” De Riggs’ debut with the platform, the first major artist interview with Kes the Band, and the first formal Julianspromos media event at TEMPO Turns 6.

By the end of the year, the cameras had moved from New York interviews and concerts to Six Flags, New York Carnival and eventually Miami Carnival, establishing the foundation for the larger regional coverage that followed.

2011 was the year the pieces began coming together.

Julianspromos entered the year still developing its identity beyond online Caribbean music promotion. By February, Sheniele “Vivaa” Dodson was conducting the platform’s first artist interview with Young Devyn. A few months later, Chandelle “Chandy” De Riggs made her Julianspromos debut interviewing Problem Child, and Kes the Band became the first major artist interviewed by the platform during the height of “Wotless.”

July brought another milestone when TEMPO Turns 6 at Six Flags Great Adventure became the first event Julianspromos formally covered as media. From there, the archive grew quickly through concerts, interviews, Caribbean nightlife and New York Carnival coverage.

By October, Julianspromos had traveled to Miami Carnival week, where Vivaa interviewed several of Soca’s leading artists at Girl Power. The move into South Florida offered an early glimpse of the regional Carnival coverage that would become a major part of Julianspromos in the years ahead.

Viewed together, the surviving videos and photography capture a platform learning in real time—developing its hosts, production style, relationships and approach to documenting Caribbean culture. What began as promotion was becoming original media, and the archive being built in 2011 would become the foundation for everything that followed.
