New York’s Caribbean summer hit the water on Sunday, August 18, 2013, with Silent Morning, an early-morning Soca boat ride aboard the Nautical Empress.
Departing from the Brooklyn Army Terminal at 140 58th Street in Brooklyn, the party began at 7:00 AM, bringing together Soca, dancing and a Caribbean crowd ready to start the day with a fete.
With New York Carnival only weeks away, Silent Morning landed right in the middle of one of the busiest periods of the city’s Caribbean summer.

An Early-Morning Fete on the Water
Silent Morning took the Caribbean breakfast-party concept out onto New York Harbor.
Instead of waiting until nightfall, patrons arrived early, boarded the boat and started the day with Soca.
The Nautical Empress became the venue, with the music, crowd and waterfront combining to create a party atmosphere very different from a traditional nightclub or concert.
Once the boat departed, everyone was part of the same fete until it returned.
Silent Morning and New York Carnival Season
The timing was perfect for Soca.
By mid-August, New York was already deep into its Carnival build-up.
Mas bands were preparing costumes for Eastern Parkway, fetes were filling the weekends, DJs were pushing that year’s biggest records, and Caribbean communities across the city were counting down to Labor Day.
Silent Morning became part of that wider Carnival-season atmosphere.
It was not a parade or mas-band event, but it shared the same soundtrack and energy that filled Brooklyn throughout August.
The Nautical Empress
The Nautical Empress provided the setting for the 2013 edition.
Patrons boarded from the Brooklyn Army Terminal, with the event scheduled to begin at 7:00 AM.
Admission was advertised at $50.
The early start was central to the identity of the party. Silent Morning was designed as a breakfast-style fete, taking the energy usually associated with nighttime Soca events and moving it into the morning.
