Boston Caribbean Carnival 2014: Mas, Soca & Parade Highlights
On Saturday, August 23, 2014, Boston Caribbean Carnival brought mas, Soca and Caribbean culture back to the streets for one of the city’s biggest summer celebrations.
Julianspromos was there for the main Carnival parade, capturing masqueraders on the road, colorful costumes, music trucks and the atmosphere surrounding Boston’s Caribbean community on Carnival Day.
The coverage was hosted by Marsha Monelle, filmed by Calvin Tucker and later edited by Julian C. Hackett.

By the time the 2014 parade took place, Boston Caribbean Carnival had already been part of the city for more than 40 years.
The tradition dates back to 1973, when Ken Bonaparte Mitchell and Ivy Ponder helped introduce a Caribbean-style Carnival celebration to Boston.
Over the decades, what began as a smaller gathering grew into a major annual celebration where Caribbean communities could bring mas, music, flags and culture onto the streets of the city.
That tradition was fully alive on August 23, 2014.
Mas and Soca on the Road
The main parade brought bands and masqueraders onto the road in themed costumes as Soca provided the soundtrack to the afternoon.
Feathers, sequins, bright colors and elaborate mas filled the streets as participants made their way toward Franklin Park, with spectators lining the route to watch Carnival unfold.
For the Julianspromos camera, the focus was the road itself — the people playing mas, the costumes moving through the crowd and the music and energy surrounding the parade.
It is the kind of Carnival footage that becomes even more interesting with time. Hairstyles change. Costumes change. Music changes. People who were simply enjoying the road in 2014 become part of a visual record of what Boston Carnival looked and felt like at that exact moment.
Marsha Monelle Hosts the Coverage
Guiding viewers through the 2014 Julianspromos coverage was Marsha Monelle.
Rather than simply presenting uninterrupted parade footage, Marsha gave the Boston coverage an on-camera presence while the camera moved through the Carnival atmosphere around her.
Behind the camera was Calvin Tucker, documenting the parade and masqueraders on the road.
The footage was later edited by Julian C. Hackett for Julianspromos.

A Boston Caribbean Carnival Tradition
Boston Caribbean Carnival has roots dating back to 1973, when Ken Bonaparte Mitchell and Ivy Ponder helped establish a Caribbean-style Carnival celebration in the city.
Over the decades, the event grew into an important annual gathering for Boston’s Caribbean community, bringing together mas, music, costume design and traditions carried from across the Caribbean.
By the time Julianspromos documented the 2014 parade, Boston Carnival had already been part of the city’s cultural landscape for more than four decades.
That history gives the surviving footage added meaning: it captures one year in a much longer Carnival tradition.

The 2014 Boston Caribbean Carnival coverage represents another stop in the expanding Julianspromos archive of Caribbean culture during the 2010s.
By this period, Julianspromos coverage had grown beyond its New York base, documenting Caribbean artists, events and Carnival celebrations in multiple cities including New York, Miami, Washington, D.C., Toronto and Boston.
Each city brought a different Carnival experience and another Caribbean community into the growing visual record.
For Boston, Marsha Monelle hosted the coverage, Calvin Tucker captured the parade and Julian C. Hackett completed the final edit.
More than a decade later, those roles left behind something that has become increasingly important: original footage and photos showing Boston Caribbean Carnival exactly as Julianspromos encountered it on August 23, 2014.
What was once simply event coverage now forms another piece of a larger Caribbean media archive documenting the people, music and Carnival culture of that era.
