Fire Fete Toronto Carnival 2014 Highlights

Julianspromos was in Toronto on Sunday, August 3, 2014 for Fire Fete: Toronto Carnival Edition, documenting one of the major Soca events closing out Toronto Caribbean Carnival weekend.

Held at Sound Academy, 11 Polson Street in Toronto, Fire Fete assembled a large cast of Caribbean performers for a night centered almost entirely around Soca and live entertainment. Original Julianspromos coverage was filmed by Julian Hackett, capturing performances and the atmosphere inside the packed waterfront venue.

The 2014 lineup included Bunji Garlin, Fay-Ann Lyons and the Viking Band, Skinny Fabulous, Iwer George, Tallpree, Lavaman, JW & Blaze, KI & 3Veni, K Rich and Drupatee.

Fire Fete on Carnival Sunday

Fire Fete had already developed into a longstanding part of Toronto’s Caribbean Carnival weekend by the time Julianspromos documented the 2014 edition.

Surviving coverage traces the Toronto Fire Fete series back to the mid-2000s. Fire Fete II was staged at Toronto’s Kool Haus in July 2005, while Fire Fete 4 followed in August 2006, when Trini Jungle Juice described the event as sold out and one of the most talked-about fetes surrounding Caribana.

By the early 2010s, Fire Fete had established itself as a Carnival Sunday tradition, giving Soca fans one more major live event after the Parade of Bands.

Soca Takes Over Sound Academy

For the 2014 edition, Fire Fete returned to Sound Academy, the large waterfront entertainment venue on Polson Street that became home to numerous Caribbean concerts and Carnival weekend parties during this period.

The combination of a large indoor concert space and outdoor waterfront setting made the venue particularly suited to events bringing together multiple artists and bands.

The previous year’s Fire Fete at Sound Academy was remembered by attendees as an extremely packed Carnival Sunday event featuring a similarly large Soca lineup. Contemporary coverage described the venue as filled with flag-waving Caribbean patrons and live performances throughout the night.

Bunji Garlin, Fay-Ann Lyons and the Viking Band

Among the headline performers were Bunji Garlin and Fay-Ann Lyons, appearing with the Viking Band during a major period in both artists’ international careers.

Bunji’s crossover momentum following “Differentology” had helped bring increased international attention to Soca, while Fay-Ann remained one of the genre’s leading live performers.

Their appearance at Fire Fete placed them at the center of a lineup drawing artists from several Caribbean islands into one Toronto Carnival production.

A Caribbean-Wide Soca Lineup

Fire Fete’s 2014 cast reflected the international nature of Toronto Carnival itself.

Skinny Fabulous represented St. Vincent and the Grenadines, while Grenadian performers Tallpree and Lavaman brought the energy of Jab and Power Soca to the stage.

Trinidad and Tobago was represented throughout the lineup by artists including Iwer George, JW & Blaze and K Rich, while KI & 3Veni and Drupatee brought Chutney Soca into the mix.

That range gave the event a broader Caribbean identity rather than building the night around a single artist or band.

Fire Fete and Toronto Carnival Culture

Toronto Caribbean Carnival had long developed an entertainment ecosystem extending far beyond the daytime Parade of Bands.

Throughout Carnival weekend, the Greater Toronto Area hosted concerts, fetes, boat rides, J’Ouvert events and parties featuring artists and DJs visiting from across the Caribbean.

Fire Fete occupied a particularly useful position in that calendar. Staged on Carnival Sunday, it offered patrons one of the final large Soca gatherings before the weekend came to an end.

The event’s longevity also makes the original Julianspromos footage more meaningful today. It documents an established Toronto Soca tradition during a period when Carnival-weekend entertainment was becoming increasingly important to artists touring internationally.

Julianspromos Behind the Camera

Original video coverage of Fire Fete 2014 was produced by Julian Hackett for Julianspromos.

Rather than focusing on a single performance, the resulting video captured highlights from across the event’s extensive lineup, preserving several artists who shared the Fire Fete stage that night.

The production came during an important period in Julianspromos history. In 2014, the JulianspromosTV YouTube channel reached 100,000 subscribers, as the company continued expanding from digital music promotion into original Caribbean multimedia coverage.

Fire Fete therefore sits naturally alongside Julianspromos’ surviving 2014 coverage of Toronto Carnival, New York Carnival, Miami Carnival, Hollywood Carnival, concerts and other Caribbean events.
