House of Cards New York 2014: Machel Montano Takes Soca to Resorts World
New York Carnival Weekend was heating up on Saturday, August 30, 2014, when House of Cards brought a major night of Soca to Resorts World Casino New York City in Queens.
Presented by TriniFly Promotions, the concert brought together Machel Montano HD, Lyrikal, 5Star Akil, Lead Pipe & Saddis and more for a Labor Day Weekend lineup connecting some of the biggest sounds moving through the 2014 Caribbean Carnival season.

Saturday Night at Resorts World
House of Cards gave Carnival Weekend revelers another major destination outside of Brooklyn.
The original flyer advertised doors at 8:00 PM and showtime at 10:00 PM, along with free parking at Resorts World Casino.
With Machel Montano at the center of the bill and artists from Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados joining him, Queens was getting its own taste of the Caribbean festival season.
By Saturday night, New York was fully in Carnival mode.
Machel Montano Arrives in a Championship Year
Machel Montano came into New York Carnival Weekend after a huge Trinidad Carnival season.
His “Ministry of Road” had dominated Carnival 2014, earning him the Road March title, while Machel also captured the International Power Soca Monarch crown.
That timing made the Resorts World appearance especially exciting for Soca fans.
The songs that had taken over Trinidad only months earlier were now following Machel into New York, just as the city was preparing for its own Labor Day Carnival celebrations.
House of Cards caught Machel right in the middle of that momentum.
Trinidad Meets Barbados in Queens
The supporting lineup made the night feel even more connected to the wider Caribbean Carnival calendar.
Lyrikal and 5Star Akil added more Trinidad and Tobago Soca to the bill, while Lead Pipe & Saddis arrived after a major Barbados Crop Over season.
Their hit “Ah Feeling” had become one of the songs of Crop Over 2014, giving the Queens audience another direct connection to the music that had been moving through the Caribbean that summer.
That was part of what made New York Carnival Weekend so much fun.
By Labor Day, artists and songs that had been heard at Trinidad Carnival, Crop Over and other Caribbean festivals were arriving in New York — sometimes all on the same stage.

A Different Side of New York Carnival Weekend
New York Carnival is often remembered through Eastern Parkway, costumes and the road, but Labor Day Weekend stretched far beyond the parade itself.
Across the city were concerts, fetes, breakfast parties and late-night events keeping Caribbean music moving from morning into the early hours.
House of Cards brought that Carnival energy into Queens.
Instead of mas on Eastern Parkway, this was live Soca inside Resorts World Casino — artists who had spent the year moving through Caribbean festivals now performing for a New York audience gathered for Labor Day Weekend.
Looking back, the timing tells the story.
It was August 2014. “Ministry of Road” was still fresh. Crop Over had only recently wrapped up. New York Carnival Monday was still ahead.
And the city was packed with Caribbean events.

TriniFly Promotions presented House of Cards at Resorts World Casino New York City, adding another major Caribbean concert to the packed Labor Day Weekend calendar.
The venue offered a different setting from many of the clubs, outdoor spaces and Brooklyn party venues associated with the weekend.
For one Saturday night, Resorts World became part of New York’s Carnival circuit.

House of Cards was only one part of an especially busy New York Carnival Weekend 2014 for Julianspromos.
On Saturday, August 30 alone, the team covered three separate major Caribbean events across New York City.
While Intrigue Lane and Julian C. Hackett were at Resorts World for House of Cards, Julianspromos was also documenting Wii Carnival in Brooklyn and DJ Norie’s Anything Goes Live at Amazura in Queens.
Three events.
One Saturday night.
Different parts of New York City.
And the weekend did not end there.
Across New York Carnival Weekend 2014, Julianspromos covered six events in total.
Looking back, that weekend shows how much the operation had grown by this point. What had started a few years earlier with individual media assignments had developed into a team capable of covering multiple major events at the same time during one of the busiest Caribbean weekends of the year.
At House of Cards, Intrigue Lane handled the on-camera hosting while Julian C. Hackett filmed and edited the coverage.
Elsewhere, other Julianspromos team members were doing the same thing.
