Kumbiya My Pump New York 2014 Highlights
During Memorial Weekend 2014, Julianspromos was in Brooklyn for Kumbiya My Pump, a Saturday-morning Caribbean party bringing together Soca, DJs and New York’s growing year-round Caribbean entertainment scene.
Held on May 24, 2014 at Pulse48 Yard, the event was presented by Graduates Entertainment, Tony Cross and DJ Dayne.
Julianspromos documented the experience with Sheniele “Vivaa” Dodson on the scene, capturing the music, personalities and crowd energy surrounding another busy Memorial Weekend in New York.
Memorial Weekend Soca in Brooklyn
Memorial Weekend had become an important date on New York’s Caribbean entertainment calendar by the early 2010s.
Long before Labor Day Carnival arrived, Soca audiences were already moving between fetes, concerts, outdoor parties and DJ-driven events throughout the city.
Kumbiya My Pump was part of that scene, giving patrons a Saturday-morning celebration built around Caribbean music and a deep rotation of DJs and sounds.
The DJs Behind Kumbiya My Pump
Music came from a wide Caribbean DJ lineup including Tony Cross & Kevin Evil, Back 2 Basics, DJ Dayne, DJ Paddy, Smooth Groove, Platinum Sounds, Jonboi and Keinton Diehard.
Rather than being centered around a single headline performer, Kumbiya My Pump relied on the DJs, the selections and the crowd itself to drive the experience.
That format reflects an important part of Soca culture in New York. DJs and sounds helped keep Carnival music active throughout the year, introducing new records, extending the life of popular songs and connecting audiences with music coming out of Trinidad and the wider Caribbean.
Sheniele “Vivaa” Dodson on the Scene
Sheniele “Vivaa” Dodson brought viewers into the middle of the event for Julianspromos.
During this period, her on-camera work was becoming a familiar part of the platform’s original Caribbean coverage, with assignments spanning fetes, Carnival, concerts, artist interviews and other events.
Kumbiya My Pump became another chapter in that growing multimedia history.
New York Soca Beyond Carnival
Events like Kumbiya My Pump help show how active New York’s Soca scene was outside Labor Day weekend.
Caribbean audiences supported parties throughout the spring and summer, creating a year-round circuit for promoters, DJs, artists and fans.
That ecosystem helped Soca maintain an international presence long after the Trinidad Carnival season ended.
