Boston Carnival 2015: Camo Band Brings “Shipwrecked” to the Road
Boston’s streets filled with feathers, Soca and Caribbean flags on Saturday, August 29, 2015, as the 42nd annual Boston Caribbean Carnival Parade moved through Roxbury and Dorchester toward Franklin Park.
For the 2015 road experience, Camo Band by Evolution Entertainment presented “Shipwrecked,” turning the Carnival route into a sea-inspired mas presentation built around treasure, fantasy and life after disaster.
Among the masqueraders was Sheniele “Vivaa” Dodson, who hosted the Julianspromos coverage while playing mas in the band.
Camo Band Goes “Shipwrecked”
Camo Band’s “Shipwrecked” presentation gave the band a clear visual world to work with on the road.
The theme played with the imagery of sunken treasure, shipwrecks and a tropical world left behind at sea, giving costume designers room to mix Caribbean color with a darker nautical concept.
Vivaa joined the band in the “Sunken Treasure Queen” costume, designed by Daryl, with the concept developed collaboratively by Vivaa and the designer.
That meant the coverage was not simply filmed from outside the band.
Vivaa was inside the mas.
Carnival Through Roxbury and Dorchester
The Boston Caribbean Carnival Parade began near the Roxbury YMCA on Martin Luther King Boulevard, continued down Warren Street and moved toward Franklin Park. Contemporary coverage described thousands of masqueraders, stilt walkers and revelers filling the streets as Soca blasted from trucks leading the bands.
For Camo Band, the road was where the Shipwrecked concept finally had room to move.
Costumes that had been designed and fitted before Carnival were now surrounded by flags, music trucks, spectators and the movement of the parade.
Vivaa as the Sunken Treasure Queen
Vivaa’s costume gave the coverage another layer.
Instead of standing beside the parade interviewing masqueraders from the sidewalk, she was dressed in full costume and moving with Camo Band while still hosting the coverage.
That made the footage feel less like an outside report and more like a view from inside the road experience.
The costume itself became part of the story: Sunken Treasure Queen, tied directly to the Shipwrecked theme and created for Vivaa’s participation with the band.
A Different Boston Carnival Assignment
The 2015 trip also looked different from the previous year’s Boston coverage.
In 2014, Julianspromos’ Boston Carnival footage had been hosted locally by Marsha Monelle, filmed by Calvin Tucker and edited afterward by Julian C. Hackett. By 2015, Vivaa and Julian were on the ground together, with Vivaa hosting and playing mas while Julian filmed the road coverage.
The live 2015 archive also credits Calvin Tucker with additional aerial footage, giving the finished coverage another perspective on the celebration.

Julianspromos documented Boston Caribbean Carnival on August 29, 2015, joining Camo Band by Evolution Entertainment for its Shipwrecked presentation.
Sheniele “Vivaa” Dodson hosted the coverage while playing mas as the Sunken Treasure Queen. Julian C. Hackett filmed and edited the main footage, with additional aerial footage credited on the original archive page to Boston videographer Calvin Tucker.

The surviving footage and photographs preserve both Camo Band’s Shipwrecked presentation and another chapter in Julianspromos’ expanding Carnival coverage beyond New York.
