Detailz Mas “Raises the Bar” for New York Carnival 2014

Detailz Mas Production returned for its second New York Carnival season on Sunday, June 1, 2014, unveiling “Raise the Bar” ahead of Labor Day on Eastern Parkway.

The concept put a distinctly New York spin on Carnival. Detailz created a ten-section presentation inspired by bars and nightlife across the city, while the title carried a second meaning: the young band wanted to push itself creatively and build on its first year on the road.

Julianspromos captured the launch with Sheniele “Vivaa” Dodson hosting the coverage and Julian C. Hackett shooting and editing the footage.

The Julianspromos launch video was uploaded on June 4, 2014, three days after the unveiling.

A Carnival Presentation Inspired by New York Nightlife

“Raise the Bar” worked on two levels.

Each of the ten sections took inspiration from a different bar or nightlife experience around New York, allowing Detailz to turn the atmosphere of the city after dark into Carnival costume design.

At the same time, the band used the name as a statement about what it wanted to accomplish creatively.

Rather than treating the theme as simply a collection of nightclub references, Detailz wanted the presentation to reflect stronger pageantry, imagination and design within New York mas. Caribbean Life later described the concept as both a tribute to the diversity of New York nightlife and a call to elevate Carnival artistry.

Detailz Enters Its Second Year

The ambition behind “Raise the Bar” becomes even more interesting because Detailz was still a relatively new band.

The organization had competed in the small-band category in 2013, its first year on Eastern Parkway. For 2014, the team was looking to grow and move toward the medium-band category.

That made the June launch more than another costume unveiling.

It was Detailz showing New York Carnival audiences how much it planned to grow from one season to the next.

Frankie’s Lounge Comes to Life in Mas

One section showed particularly clearly how Detailz translated the nightlife idea into costume.

Frankie’s Lounge, designed by Joanne Gamaldo, drew inspiration from the East Flatbush nightspot and used gold and silver elements to reflect the glamour, lights and energy associated with a night out.

Instead of creating one general “nightlife” section, Detailz allowed individual venues and experiences to shape different parts of the band.

That gave “Raise the Bar” a strong New York identity while keeping the presentation rooted in Caribbean Carnival design.

Vivaa Takes Viewers Inside the Launch

For Julianspromos, Vivaa guided viewers through the Detailz launch as the costumes and concept were introduced.

Mas-band launches had become an increasingly important part of Julianspromos’ New York Carnival coverage by this period. They allowed viewers to see Carnival before Eastern Parkway — when designers, bandleaders and models were still introducing the ideas that would later appear on the road.

Behind the camera, Julian C. Hackett filmed and edited the finished coverage.

From the Launch to Eastern Parkway

After the June unveiling, work continued through the summer as Detailz prepared the full presentation for Labor Day.

By Carnival season, “Raise The Bar” was officially listed as Detailz Mas Production’s 2014 adult-band portrayal, with the band based on Empire Boulevard in Brooklyn.

The ten-section concept would eventually leave the launch setting and become part of the larger New York Carnival spectacle on Eastern Parkway.

For Detailz, that road appearance represented another step in the organization’s growth from its first season in 2013.

From the Julianspromos Archives

The Detailz Mas launch is another example of how Julianspromos was expanding its New York Carnival documentation during 2014.

The archive was increasingly following Carnival long before Labor Day — capturing band launches, costume presentations and the creative process that happened months before masqueraders reached Eastern Parkway.

With Vivaa hosting and Julian C. Hackett shooting and editing, the Detailz coverage preserved the band at an especially interesting point in its history: only its second New York Carnival season, but already attempting to grow into a larger category with a more ambitious ten-section presentation.

Coverage like this helped turn the Julianspromos collection into more than a record of Carnival day itself. It preserved the months of creativity, preparation and community activity that made the road possible.

Today, the surviving video captures Detailz at the moment it introduced “Raise the Bar” — a theme that described both the costumes and the young band’s ambitions for its second year.
