Freaks NY Makes Its Eastern Parkway Debut with “Illusions” in 2012
Before Freaks Mas became a familiar name on Eastern Parkway, Freaks NY / Natural Freaks was preparing for its first run at New York Carnival.
On June 17, 2012, Julianspromos captured the band’s Brooklyn launch as the crew unveiled its 2012 presentation, identified in the original video as “Illusion.” The launch offered masqueraders an early look at the costumes and energy Freaks NY planned to bring to Labor Day.
What makes the footage more interesting today is what happened next. That summer would become Freaks Mas’ first appearance on Eastern Parkway, and the band went on to finish among the top large bands at the 2012 West Indian American Day Carnival.
Freaks NY Gets Ready for the Parkway
The 2012 season marked a new chapter for the Natural Freaks organization.
Natural Freaks had already built a following through Caribbean parties and Carnival activity, particularly in Miami, but New York mas was becoming a bigger part of the operation.
A 2013 Caribbean Life profile later described Freaks Mas as making its second appearance on Eastern Parkway that year, confirming that 2012 had been the band’s Parkway debut. The same profile explained that Freaks Mas and Natural Freaks operated under the same umbrella, with the mas identity growing out of the Natural Freaks brand.
So when the costumes were unveiled in June 2012, the band was not simply preparing for another Carnival season.
It was preparing to introduce itself to New York Carnival in a major way.
The Band Launch
Band-launch season is where Carnival starts becoming real.
Themes move from ideas to costumes.
Sections are introduced.
Masqueraders start choosing where they want to play.
And bands get their first chance to show competitors and Carnival fans what they plan to bring onto the road.
The Julianspromos footage captures Freaks NY during that build-up, before the costumes ever reached Eastern Parkway.
The original upload calls the presentation “Illusion,” while later WIADCA competition results record Natural Freaks Unlimited’s final Carnival portrayal as “Illusions.”
A Strong First Year on Eastern Parkway
By Labor Day, Freaks NY had moved from the launch stage to one of the largest Caribbean Carnival celebrations in North America.
The band competed in the Adult Large Band category at the 2012 West Indian American Day Carnival.
When the results were announced, Natural Freaks Unlimited finished in third place with “Illusions.”
The top three were:
Ramajay Mas – Wings: We’re Flying
Sesame Flyers International – Fire & Ice
Natural Freaks Unlimited – Illusions
For a first appearance on Eastern Parkway, finishing among the top three large bands was a strong introduction.
From Miami Energy to New York Mas
The Freaks approach to Carnival had already been shaped by years of experience in Miami.
When Caribbean Life profiled the organization a year later, co-band leader Ray Bruce described Freaks Mas as bringing the same kind of high-energy experience the organization had developed through its Miami Carnival involvement. The article noted that Natural Freaks had already spent years building a reputation in Miami before expanding further into New York mas.
That background helps explain the style Freaks NY was trying to bring onto Eastern Parkway.
This was not simply a new band learning Carnival from scratch.
It was an established Caribbean entertainment crew taking its experience and translating it into a New York mas-band presentation.
The Start of a New York Carnival Run
The 2012 season turned out to be the beginning of something much larger.
After making its Eastern Parkway debut with Illusions, Freaks Mas returned the following year with Aquaria, confirming that the band’s presence in New York Carnival was becoming more permanent.
Over the years that followed, Freaks Mas would continue developing its identity around elaborate presentations, large groups of masqueraders and the high-energy road experience associated with the Natural Freaks name.
But in June 2012, all of that was still ahead.
The costumes were just being revealed.
The band had not yet crossed Eastern Parkway.
And nobody at the launch knew that Freaks NY was only a few months away from finishing third among New York Carnival’s large adult bands in its very first year on the road.
That makes this old Julianspromos video more than another costume launch.
It captures the beginning of Freaks Mas on Eastern Parkway.
