Freaks NY Launches “Illusion” Ahead of Its 2012 Eastern Parkway Debut
On June 17, 2012, Freaks NY / Natural Freaks unveiled its “Illusion” presentation in Brooklyn ahead of New York Carnival and the West Indian American Day Carnival on Eastern Parkway.
Julianspromos documented the launch with Sheniele “Vivaa” Dodson and Intrigue Lane hosting the on-camera coverage, while Julian C. Hackett shot and edited the footage.
The band launch gave masqueraders an early look at the costumes, style and atmosphere Freaks NY was preparing for its first New York Carnival season. A few months later, Freaks would make its Eastern Parkway debut and finish among the top three Adult Large Bands at the 2012 Carnival.
Freaks NY Prepares for New York Carnival
The 2012 season marked an important step for the Freaks brand in New York.
Before becoming a more familiar presence on Eastern Parkway, Freaks NY was building its local mas identity through costume launches, Carnival events and a growing community around the band.
The June launch introduced Illusion, giving Carnival followers their first look at the concept before it reached the road.
The Illusion Band Launch
Band launches are where a Carnival presentation first comes to life in public.
Design concepts move from preparation into full visual form as costumes are placed on models, individual sections are revealed and masqueraders begin deciding how they want to experience the road.
For Freaks NY, the June 2012 launch introduced Illusion as the presentation that would carry the band into its first New York Carnival campaign.
Vivaa and Intrigue Lane led Julianspromos’ on-camera coverage of the launch, bringing viewers closer to the costumes and atmosphere surrounding the presentation.
Behind the camera, Julian C. Hackett filmed and edited the coverage, preserving the launch before the band reached Eastern Parkway later that summer.

Vivaa and Intrigue Cover Freaks NY
The surviving footage also captures an early period of Julianspromos’ expanding New York Carnival coverage.
Sheniele “Vivaa” Dodson and Intrigue Lane shared the on-camera role at the Freaks NY launch, documenting the people, costumes and energy surrounding the presentation.
Their coverage gave viewers more than a straightforward costume showcase, while Julian C. Hackett’s filming and editing preserved the launch as part of the 2012 Carnival archive.
From Illusion to Eastern Parkway
What began at the June launch continued through the summer and onto Eastern Parkway for Labor Day.
That year marked Freaks NY’s first appearance on Eastern Parkway, an important milestone in the growth of the band’s New York presence.
By the time the 2012 West Indian American Day Carnival arrived, Freaks had moved from band-launch anticipation to full road participation.
A Top-Three Finish in 2012
The official 2012 Carnival results recorded the Adult Large Band competition as:
Ramajay Mas — “Wings: We’re Flying”
Sesame Flyers International — “Fire & Ice”
Natural Freaks Unlimited — “Illusions”
That result gave Freaks a third-place finish in Adult Large Band during its debut year on Eastern Parkway.
The theme was presented at the launch as “Illusion,” while the final Carnival results recorded the name as “Illusions.”
Either way, the 2012 presentation gave Freaks a strong first showing in New York’s large-band competition.
Freaks NY’s First Eastern Parkway Chapter
The 2012 season is significant because it captures the beginning of Freaks’ New York Carnival story.
The June band launch preserved the presentation before Labor Day.
The Eastern Parkway appearance showed the band’s transition from launch-night concept to a competitive Carnival presence.
For a first year on the Parkway, a top-three Adult Large Band finish was a strong debut.
The Beginning of the Freaks Mas Run
The 2012 appearance was only the beginning.
Freaks returned to Eastern Parkway in 2013, continuing to build the New York side of the organization.
Over the seasons that followed, Freaks Mas became increasingly established within Brooklyn Carnival, developing a recognizable identity around large groups of masqueraders, high-energy road experiences and elaborate presentations.

Later in 2012: Freaks NY Goes to Miami
The Freaks story continued after New York Carnival.
Later that year, Freaks NY / Natural Freaks brought its “RIO” presentation to Miami Carnival, where Julianspromos followed the group onto the road in South Florida.
