Freaks NY “RIO” Hits the Road at Miami Carnival 2012

New York came ready for the road at Miami Carnival 2012 as Freaks NY / Natural Freaks brought its colorful “RIO” presentation to South Florida for Carnival Sunday at Sun Life Stadium.

For Julianspromos, the day marked a major turning point. It was the company’s first-ever Carnival experience outside New York Carnival, its first time covering Miami Carnival on the road, and the first major expansion of its Carnival media coverage beyond the New York City area.

The journey had started weeks earlier in Brooklyn, where Natural Freaks launched its RIO presentation on August 24 at The Triangle near Ralph Avenue and Clarendon Road. Contemporary Carnival coverage specifically described the New York crew as preparing for its Miami One Carnival activities.

From Brooklyn to the Miami Road

RIO was already generating excitement before anyone reached Florida.

Natural Freaks unveiled the presentation in Brooklyn in August, giving New York masqueraders a first look at the concept before the crew headed south for Miami Carnival. The launch connected two Caribbean communities that already shared a strong Carnival relationship: New York and South Florida.

By Sunday, October 7, 2012, the preview was over.

Miami Broward One Carnival took over Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens, with the parade beginning around midday and mas bands, DJs and music trucks filling the Carnival route. Natural Freaks was among the sounds listed for the road that year.

For the Freaks crew, this was where RIO finally came alive.

RIO Comes Alive

The Julianspromos highlights put the camera directly into the Carnival experience.

Costumes moved through the road.

Masqueraders danced around the trucks.

Soca blasted through the band.

Flags, drinks, feathers and nonstop movement filled the surroundings as Freaks NY brought its New York energy into Miami Carnival.

It was a completely different environment from the concerts and artist interviews Julianspromos had been covering.

There was no backstage separating the media from the action.

The action was everywhere.

Julianspromos’ First Carnival Beyond New York

For Julianspromos, stepping onto the Miami Carnival road with Freaks NY represented something completely new.

Up to that point, the company’s Carnival experience had been rooted in New York Carnival and the wider New York City Caribbean scene.

Miami changed that.

This was the first time Julianspromos had taken its Carnival coverage beyond the NYC area and experienced another major Carnival destination from inside the celebration itself.

The difference was immediately visible.

Miami Carnival brought together visitors from throughout the Caribbean and diaspora, with tens of thousands of people gathering around massive music trucks and elaborate mas presentations at Sun Life Stadium. Contemporary coverage described New Yorkers as a major part of the visiting crowd while noting how different Miami Carnival felt from Labor Day on Brooklyn’s Eastern Parkway.

For the Julianspromos team, that first Miami road experience opened the door to thinking much bigger about where Carnival coverage could go next.

Following Freaks NY on the Road

Freaks NY gave Julianspromos a natural way into that first Miami experience.

Rather than covering Carnival from the sidelines, the team moved with a familiar New York crew as RIO made the transition from its Brooklyn launch to the Miami road.

That made the experience feel connected to where Julianspromos had come from while introducing the company to an entirely new Carnival environment.

The video captures that crossover clearly: New York mas in Miami, surrounded by thousands of Caribbean revelers from across the region.

The focus was not a headline singer or stage performance.

The masqueraders were the stars.

Natural Freaks Takes First Place

The Freaks crew also left Miami with something to celebrate.

The published 2012 Miami-Broward Carnival competition results list Natural Freaks in first place for Best Playing Out of Town DJ, with Natural Freaks also identified as the associated mas band.

That made the weekend even sweeter.

RIO had traveled from its New York launch to the Miami road, and the crew finished Carnival Sunday with a first-place result.

For a group representing New York during one of Miami’s biggest Caribbean weekends, it was a strong ending to the journey.

A New Chapter Begins in Miami

The significance of this day for Julianspromos went beyond one Carnival video.

The company had already begun expanding its media coverage through artist interviews, concerts and events outside New York, but Miami Carnival 2012 was the first time that expansion reached Carnival itself.

New York Carnival was no longer the only Carnival world Julianspromos knew firsthand.

Miami became the next step.

That first road experience helped establish the kind of approach that would later become much more familiar: traveling into different Carnival markets, documenting the culture from inside the events and bringing the experience back to the Julianspromos audience.

And it started with Freaks NY.

Freaks NY, RIO and Miami Carnival 2012

By the end of Carnival Sunday, the story had come full circle.

RIO started in Brooklyn.

Freaks NY took it south.

Natural Freaks hit the Miami road.

The crew earned first place for Best Playing Out of Town DJ.

And Julianspromos experienced Carnival outside New York for the first time.

What looked at the time like another wild day of mas, Soca and Carnival energy would ultimately become one of the key moments in Julianspromos’ early expansion.

Miami Carnival 2012 was the moment the Carnival world got bigger.
