Machel Montano Returns to Madison Square Garden for a Sold-Out 2011 Soca Spectacle
On March 25, 2011, Machel Montano brought The Return to New York with a sold-out concert at The Theater at Madison Square Garden.
The show came just weeks after a major Trinidad Carnival season for Machel. He had returned to competition, won the International Power Soca Monarch title, and captured the 2011 Road March with “Advantage.”
According to contemporary coverage from the Trinidad Guardian, the New York concert was organized after his Soca Monarch victory and sold out after only three weeks of promotion.

Bringing Carnival Energy to New York
The concert was held at The Theater at Madison Square Garden, where Machel was joined by a lineup representing several generations of Trinidad and Tobago music.
Before Machel took the stage, KI and Rikki Jai performed, bringing chutney and chutney Soca into the show.
Machel then made one of the night's most memorable entrances.
He entered a large cage on stage, which was covered and rotated. When the covering was removed, Machel had disappeared and a tiger was inside the cage.
Moments later, Machel returned to the stage performing “Advantage” as the HD dancers joined him. Contemporary reporting described the crowd stamping and moving so heavily that security became concerned about the movement inside the theater. Machel responded: “This is how we do it, don’t get scared.”
The HD Family and Special Guests
The concert was much more than a solo Machel Montano performance.
Members of the HD Family, including Patrice Roberts, Farmer Nappy and Zan, appeared during the show.
Former Xtatik member Peter C. Lewis also joined Machel for selections from earlier in his career, while Benjai, who was enjoying a major 2011 Carnival season with “Trini,” was another featured guest.
The guest appearances allowed the concert to move between Machel's current Carnival hits and music from different periods of his career.
Sparrow and Calypso Rose
Two of the night's most significant guests were The Mighty Sparrow and Calypso Rose.
Both appeared on stage during the concert, performing individually and alongside Machel.
Their presence connected Machel's 2011 success with an earlier generation of Trinidad and Tobago music, giving the New York audience a show that reached beyond the current Carnival season.
Fans who attended the concert remembered that mix of old and new. Ticketmaster reviews posted immediately after the show repeatedly mentioned Sparrow and Calypso Rose, the energy of the crowd, and spending much of the concert on their feet.
Recognizing Kernel Roberts
Another memorable moment came when Machel recognized Kernel Roberts, who wrote “Advantage.”
During the concert, Machel announced that he would share his Soca Monarch prize money equally with Roberts in recognition of his contribution to the winning song.
Roberts' mother, Valerie Greene, was also recognized, while Machel's mother, Elizabeth “Liz” Montano, joined them on stage.
The moment gave the songwriter behind one of Carnival 2011's biggest records his own recognition during the New York show.
A Long Night of Soca
The concert continued with music from across Machel's catalog and ended with an approximately 45-minute medley featuring members of the band.
Audience reviews from the period describe the show as roughly three hours of music, dancing and guest appearances. Several fans specifically remembered rarely sitting throughout the concert.
For New York's Caribbean audience, the concert offered another taste of Trinidad Carnival only weeks after the season had ended.
The Return
March 25 also marked the release of Machel Montano's The Return album.
The 12-track project included “Advantage,” “Bend Over,” “Hard Wuk,” “On D Road” and “Spin Class,” among other releases from that period. Apple Music lists the album's release date as March 25, 2011, the same day as the Madison Square Garden concert.
That timing made the New York show a natural continuation of Machel's 2011 comeback season.
