Atlantic City Caribbean Carnival 2012: Machel Montano & Patrice Roberts
On July 21, 2012, Caribbean Carnival energy took over Atlantic City as masqueraders, music and live Soca moved from the city’s Carnival celebrations into Bader Field for an outdoor concert headlined by Machel Montano HD.
The original event flyer billed Machel Montano HD and Team HD, with Farmer Nappy and Patrice Roberts, for the Atlantic City Caribbean Carnival at Bader Field. Julianspromos was there as well, with Sheniele “Vivaa” Dodson representing the platform on camera as the surviving footage captured Machel and Patrice during one of Soca’s biggest years.
Carnival Rolls Into Bader Field
Atlantic City Carnival was more than a concert.
Contemporary promotion described a full Caribbean celebration built around a Boardwalk parade, colorful mas, steelpan, Soca music and costume judging, with the festivities continuing at Bader Field with food, vendors and live performances. The 2012 celebration was presented through the Atlantic City Carnival Committee and Tri-State Caribbean Cultural Foundation.

For Caribbean music fans, the headline attraction was hard to miss.
Machel Montano was coming to Atlantic City in the middle of an extraordinary 2012.
Machel Arrives as “Mr Fete”
Only months earlier, Machel had dominated Trinidad and Tobago Carnival.
He won Groovy Soca Monarch with “Mr Fete” and Power Soca Monarch with “Pump Yuh Flag,” with “Pump Yuh Flag” also going on to win Road March. Machel’s own biography recognizes 2012 as his Triple Crown year.
So when the Atlantic City crowd heard “Mr Fete” that July, they were hearing one of the songs that had defined the Carnival season only months earlier.
“Mr Fete” worked especially well in a setting like Atlantic City Carnival. It was a song built around the atmosphere of the fete itself — movement, freedom and the feeling that the party follows wherever you go.
On this day, that party had reached Bader Field.
Machel Montano Live in Atlantic City
Another surviving Julianspromos video captures a wider look at Machel Montano’s Atlantic City appearance, with Vivaa featured in the coverage.
The footage puts Machel’s performance into the wider atmosphere of the event rather than isolating one song.
Contemporary professional-audio coverage of the Carnival later identified Machel as the headline act on the main stage at Bader Field, confirming the scale of the concert setup used for the celebration.
Patrice Roberts Brings “A Little Wine”
The Atlantic City footage also preserves Patrice Roberts performing “A Little Wine.”
Patrice was billed on the original flyer as part of Team HD alongside Machel Montano and Farmer Nappy, bringing another familiar Soca voice to the Bader Field stage.
The surviving performance gives the archive a different piece of the afternoon: Machel brought the headline spectacle, while Patrice added the melodic, wine-driven side of Soca that has long been central to her live performances.
Team HD Comes to Atlantic City
The flyer billed the show as Machel Montano HD + Team HD, prominently naming Farmer Nappy and Patrice Roberts.
That branding mattered in 2012.
Machel’s performances during this period were not simply solo appearances. The HD presentation had become a major Soca touring attraction, bringing together artists and musicians associated with one of the genre’s most recognizable live units.
At Atlantic City Carnival, that sound was dropped into a completely different environment from Trinidad Carnival — an outdoor New Jersey celebration surrounded by mas, Caribbean food, flags and the Atlantic City summer crowd.
Vivaa in Atlantic City
Sheniele “Vivaa” Dodson represented Julianspromos during the Atlantic City coverage and appears in the surviving footage from the event.
By the summer of 2012, she had already become a familiar on-camera presence across Julianspromos’ Caribbean concert and Carnival coverage.
Atlantic City gave her another setting entirely: not a New York nightclub or a Six Flags concert, but a full Carnival celebration in New Jersey with one of Soca’s biggest stars headlining the day.
Rather than pulling attention away from the performances, her presence helped connect viewers watching online with what was happening around the stage.
A Big Summer for Soca in the Northeast
Atlantic City Carnival also landed during a particularly active stretch of Caribbean concerts in the region.
Just two weeks earlier, Machel had headlined the inaugural Caribbean Beach Fest at Jones Beach on July 8. The following weekend, Six Flags Great Adventure hosted Bacchanal as part of its Caribbean Summer Concert Series.
By July 21, the action had moved farther south to Atlantic City.
For Soca fans in the Northeast, the summer of 2012 offered multiple chances to experience major Trinidad and Tobago artists outside the traditional Labor Day Carnival weekend.
A Carnival Stage by the Shore
Atlantic City gave the music a different backdrop.
The wider celebration brought Carnival onto the Boardwalk before festivities continued at Bader Field, where masqueraders, spectators and music fans came together around the stage. Contemporary organizers described the event as a cultural celebration designed to bring the color, rhythm and traditions of Caribbean Carnival into one of New Jersey’s most recognizable entertainment destinations.
And at the center of the concert was the man calling himself Mr Fete.
For Machel Montano, it was another stop during a remarkable 2012.
For Patrice Roberts, it was another stage for the Team HD sound.
And for the crowd in Atlantic City, it was Carnival music in the open air at Bader Field.
