Monday Madness NY 2014: Machel Montano, Beenie Man & More After Carnival
New York Carnival Weekend was still going strong on Monday, September 1, 2014, when Monday Madness brought Soca, Dancehall and live Caribbean entertainment to Brooklyn after the West Indian Day Carnival parade.
The event featured advertised headliners Machel Montano, Beenie Man and Olatunji, while the surviving Julianspromos coverage also captures appearances by Mr Killa and Lead Pipe & Saddis.
Julianspromos was there documenting the performances and atmosphere of the night, with Julian C. Hackett filming and editing the surviving coverage. There was no on-camera Julianspromos host.
Carnival Monday Continues in Brooklyn
For many Carnival lovers, the celebration did not end when the masqueraders left Eastern Parkway.
Monday Madness gave the crowd another destination that evening, carrying the energy of Labor Day into a live Caribbean concert and party.
Doors opened at 4:00 PM, with an advertised 8:00 PM showtime, bringing together Soca and Dancehall audiences for one more major event before New York Carnival Weekend came to a close.
Machel Montano, Beenie Man & Olatunji
The official Monday Madness flyer placed three Caribbean artists at the center of the event.
Machel Montano, billed as the “King of Soca,” represented Trinidad and Tobago and one of the biggest names in Caribbean music.
Beenie Man, promoted as the “King of Dancehall,” brought Jamaica into the mix, giving the event a strong Dancehall presence alongside the Soca-heavy Carnival weekend.
Also advertised was Trinidad and Tobago’s Olatunji, billed on the flyer as “The Sensational Olatunji.”
A live rhythm section was also promoted as part of the night.
More Artists in the Julianspromos Coverage
The surviving Julianspromos footage shows that the night extended beyond the three artists featured on the main flyer.
Mr Killa and Lead Pipe & Saddis also appear in the surviving coverage, adding Grenadian and Barbadian Soca to an already cross-Caribbean lineup.
Together, the performances reflected the mix that defined New York Carnival Weekend: artists and audiences from different islands sharing the same stage and the same celebration.
Soca, Dancehall & the After-Carnival Crowd
Monday Madness captured the mood of Brooklyn after a full day of Carnival.
The road had already been filled with costumes and music, but the party moved indoors and onto the concert stage as the night continued.
Music between the performances included Steelie Bashment, Noah, Kevin Crown and Elegance Sounds, keeping Soca and Dancehall moving throughout the event.
For the Julianspromos camera, the focus was the live performances, the artists and the crowd enjoying one more night of Caribbean music.

Monday Madness preserves another side of New York Carnival Weekend 2014.
The Julianspromos archive from this period was documenting more than the major West Indian Day Carnival parade on Eastern Parkway. It also captured the concerts, fetes and parties surrounding the road — the events that kept Brooklyn moving throughout Labor Day Weekend.
By 2014, Julianspromos had grown from its early New York foundation into broader Caribbean event and Carnival coverage across multiple cities. At the same time, the New York archive continued expanding, documenting both major cultural celebrations and the nightlife surrounding them.
For Monday Madness, Julian C. Hackett handled both the camera and final edit, preserving a night that brought together major names from Soca and Dancehall just hours after New York Carnival.
More than a decade later, the surviving footage, flyer and photographs provide another window into what Labor Day Weekend in Brooklyn looked and sounded like in 2014.
