Natural Freaks RIO Showcase 2012: Animal Instincts for Miami Carnival
Ahead of Miami Carnival 2012, Natural Freaks brought its RIO presentation to Brooklyn for a New York showcase on Friday, August 24, 2012.
Held at The Triangle near Ralph Avenue and Clarendon Road, the event gave New York masqueraders an early look at the presentation Natural Freaks would later take to the Miami Carnival road.
Julianspromos was there to document the showcase, with Sheniele “Vivaa” Dodson hosting the coverage and the footage shot and edited by Julian C. Hackett.

Fatal Angels Presents “Animal Instincts”
The surviving Julianspromos video captures Fatal Angels presenting “Animal Instincts” as part of the Natural Freaks RIO showcase.
Models took the floor in Carnival costumes designed around the section’s theme, giving masqueraders and supporters a preview of the visual presentation ahead of Miami Carnival.
Unlike much of Julianspromos’ surviving coverage from this period, which centered on artist performances and interviews, this video turns the camera toward the mas itself — the costumes, presentation and people who help bring Carnival to life.
From Brooklyn to Miami Carnival
The August showcase was part of Natural Freaks’ preparation for Miami Broward One Carnival 2012.
Contemporary Carnival coverage described Natural Freaks as one of the New York crews preparing for Miami Carnival activities and announced the RIO launch at The Triangle in Brooklyn.
Several weeks later, Natural Freaks took RIO to South Florida for Carnival Sunday at Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens.
The connection between the two events makes the surviving showcase footage particularly valuable: it captures RIO before the presentation reached the Miami Carnival road.
Natural Freaks at Miami Carnival 2012
Natural Freaks went on to have a successful Miami Carnival weekend.
The published 2012 Miami-Broward Carnival results list Natural Freaks in first place for Best Playing Out of Town DJ, with Natural Freaks also identified as the associated mas band.
That result adds another piece of context to the earlier Brooklyn showcase. What began with the unveiling of RIO in New York eventually continued onto the Miami Carnival road.
Preserving the RIO Showcase
The surviving video was uploaded by Julianspromos on September 16, 2012, less than a month after the Brooklyn showcase.
Hosted by Sheniele “Vivaa” Dodson and shot and edited by Julian C. Hackett, the footage preserves a different side of the 2012 Carnival season — not simply the finished road experience, but one of the presentations that helped build anticipation before Miami Carnival.
More than a decade later, the Natural Freaks RIO Showcase remains part of the Julianspromos archive of original Caribbean Carnival, Soca and mas-band coverage.

Rather than focusing on a recording artist, the camera turns toward the creative side of Carnival itself.
Costume showcases and band presentations are an important part of the Carnival season. They introduce the concepts, designs and visual identities that masqueraders will eventually bring onto the road.
Preserving this presentation therefore gives the Julianspromos archive something different from a concert video. It captures part of the process that happens before Carnival reaches the road.
Documenting the Culture Around Soca
Soca may provide much of the soundtrack to Carnival, but Carnival culture extends far beyond the artists performing the music.
There are mas bands.
Costume designers.
Sections.
Promoters.
DJs.
Masqueraders.
Band launches and showcases.
By documenting events such as the Natural Freaks RIO Showcase, Julianspromos was beginning to capture more of that complete ecosystem.
The significance becomes clearer when viewed alongside the platform’s other surviving 2012 material. Julianspromos was filming major Soca and dancehall performers, conducting artist interviews and covering concerts, but the cameras were also being used to document the visual and cultural traditions surrounding Carnival.
Natural Freaks and Miami Carnival
Natural Freaks already had a presence within the Miami Carnival community during this period.
Contemporary 2012 Miami Carnival reporting listed Natural Freaks among the sounds providing music on the road, while the official competition results from that year show Natural Freaks winning Best Playing Out of Town DJ at Miami-Broward Carnival.
That wider Carnival presence gives additional context to the surviving RIO Showcase footage.
The video was not simply documenting an isolated costume presentation. It formed part of a larger Miami Carnival environment in which Natural Freaks was actively involved.
Julianspromos Expands Its Miami Coverage
For Julianspromos, the footage also belongs to a larger story taking shape in 2012.
New York remained the company’s home base, but the media operation was becoming increasingly mobile. Miami provided access to another major Caribbean community and one of the most important Carnival periods in the United States.
That expansion allowed Julianspromos to document different parts of Caribbean entertainment.
Artist interviews could happen in Miami.
Performances could be captured.
Carnival events could be covered.
And events such as the Natural Freaks RIO Showcase allowed the platform to document mas and costume culture alongside the music.
Each assignment expanded what could eventually become part of the Julianspromos archive.
More Than Performance Coverage
This is what makes the Natural Freaks footage especially useful when rebuilding the historical archive today.
If the surviving Julianspromos material consisted only of singers performing on stage, it would tell only part of the story of Caribbean entertainment during this period.
Carnival is also visual.
The costumes and presentations are part of the artistic expression surrounding the celebration, and showcases give audiences an early look at the ideas that will eventually appear during Carnival.
The “Animal Instincts” presentation preserves one of those moments from Miami Carnival 2012.
It also demonstrates that the Julianspromos media team was becoming comfortable documenting subjects that did not necessarily require a celebrity interview or headline performer to be culturally valuable.
Preserving Miami Carnival 2012
More than a decade later, the Natural Freaks RIO Showcase footage has become another piece of Julianspromos’ record of Caribbean culture in the early 2010s.
It preserves Fatal Angels’ “Animal Instincts” presentation, a piece of Miami Carnival 2012 mas culture, and another example of Julianspromos expanding the type of original content it was producing during its formative multimedia years.
Alongside the concerts and artist interviews from the same period, footage such as this helps create a more complete historical picture.
Julianspromos was not only documenting the artists who created the soundtrack to Carnival.
The platform was increasingly documenting the Carnival culture surrounding that music as well.
