Freaks NY Unveils Its 2013 Carnival Presentation | Mas Band Launch Highlights
In 2013, Freaks NY kicked off another New York Carnival season by unveiling its latest presentation at the band's annual mas launch.
Julianspromos was there to capture the launch, documenting the costumes, models and atmosphere as Freaks NY introduced what masqueraders could expect for the upcoming Carnival season.
The surviving highlight video preserves another chapter in the relationship between Julianspromos and Freaks NY, following earlier coverage that had already taken the platform beyond New York and onto the road at Miami Carnival.
Freaks NY Gets Ready for Carnival
Mas band launches are where Carnival begins to take visual shape.
Before masqueraders reach the road, designers and band leaders use these events to reveal the costumes, colors and individual sections that will represent the band during Carnival.
The 2013 Freaks NY launch gave supporters an early look at the band's new presentation while bringing together models, masqueraders and members of New York's Caribbean Carnival community.
Julianspromos captured the night as part of its growing coverage of New York mas bands and Carnival culture.
Continuing the Freaks NY Story
By 2013, Freaks NY was already part of the Julianspromos archive.
The previous year, Julianspromos had traveled to Miami Carnival with Freaks NY / Natural Freaks for the band's “RIO” presentation. That 2012 road experience marked Julianspromos' first Miami Carnival, its first Carnival coverage outside New York and an important early expansion beyond the New York City area.
Returning to cover Freaks NY in 2013 therefore continued an existing relationship rather than beginning a new one.
This time, the focus was back home in New York and on the beginning of a Carnival season rather than the road itself.
From the Launch to the Road
The surviving footage offers a look at Carnival before the parade begins.
Models showcase the band's costumes while the launch atmosphere gives prospective masqueraders a chance to see the presentation up close and decide how they want to experience Carnival.
For Julianspromos, events like this became another way to document Caribbean culture beyond concerts and artist interviews.
The archive was increasingly capturing the full Carnival cycle, including mas launches, fêtes, J'ouvert, road experiences and the people responsible for bringing those events to life.
Preserving Freaks NY 2013
More than a decade later, the 2013 Freaks NY Mas Band Launch highlights preserve another piece of New York Carnival history.
The footage captures Freaks NY at the start of its 2013 season while documenting a period when Julianspromos was steadily expanding the scope of its original Carnival media.
From mas launches in New York to Carnival roads outside the city, each event added another piece to a growing archive of Caribbean culture.
