On Friday, October 11, 2013, Miami Carnival weekend started early at Historic Virginia Key Beach Park with Rise Miami Meets Shine New York — All White “In Yuh Shades.”
Presented by Giselle “The Wassi One” and B2B Entertainment, the sunrise-to-afternoon fete ran from 6:00 AM to 3:00 PM, bringing together DJs and Caribbean partygoers from Miami, New York, Toronto, Trinidad and beyond.
Walshy Fire of Major Lazer appeared as the event’s special guest, joining an extensive lineup of DJs for one of the major fetes surrounding Miami Carnival 2013.

Rise Miami Meets Shine New York
Rise Miami Meets Shine New York brought together two Caribbean party brands for a major Miami Carnival Friday event.
The concept connected Rise Miami with Shine New York, creating a meeting point for Caribbean audiences traveling from different cities for Carnival weekend.
Set against the outdoor surroundings of Historic Virginia Key Beach Park, the event offered a very different atmosphere from the nighttime club fetes taking place across South Florida.
All White “In Yuh Shades”
The All White “In Yuh Shades” theme gave the event an instantly recognizable look.
Patrons arrived dressed predominantly in white and sunglasses as the party moved from sunrise through the afternoon.
With the beach setting, Miami weather and Carnival-weekend energy surrounding it, the event combined the feel of a breakfast party, beach fete and major Soca gathering in one location.
Walshy Fire and an International DJ Lineup
Walshy Fire of Major Lazer was advertised as the event’s special guest.
The music lineup brought together DJs and sounds representing several of the cities that were driving Caribbean nightlife at the time.
Advertised performers included Private Ryan, D’ Bandit, Pantrin Vibes, Elegance Sounds, House Arrest, Sounds 4 Life, Young Chow, DJ Stephen, Dr. Wax, Natural Freaks, DJ Trixta, Soca Sweetness, D’ Enforcas, Jester, Titan VCD, Back To Basics, DJ Dayne & Hollywood Sachy, Red 96.7FM Trinidad and Ryan Sayeed, among others.
That mix of talent from New York, Miami, Toronto and Trinidad reflected just how international the Miami Carnival party circuit had become.
Hosts of Rise Meets Shine
The event was hosted by Hypa Hoppa, Giselle “The Executive” and Whitey Husband.
Their presence helped connect the music, personalities and crowd throughout a nine-hour event that began early Friday morning and continued well into the afternoon.
The White Zone VIP Experience
Rise Miami Meets Shine New York also featured a dedicated White Zone VIP section, powered by Shorblu Events.
The VIP experience included a separate entrance, unlimited specialty and cocktail drinks, breakfast, a variety of finger foods, separate bars and restrooms, and a dedicated space within the event.

Julianspromos at Rise Meets Shine
Sheniele “Vivaa” Dodson was on location for Julianspromos, bringing viewers into the event and capturing the atmosphere surrounding the fete.
Julian C. Hackett documented the event for Julianspromos, preserving another chapter from Miami Carnival Weekend 2013 through video and photography.
The surviving coverage captures the crowd, music, fashion and beach setting that helped make Rise Meets Shine part of the wider Miami Carnival experience.

The photographs capture patrons in the event’s all-white theme, the Virginia Key Beach setting and the daytime atmosphere surrounding one of Miami Carnival weekend’s major fetes.
More Than the Carnival Road
Miami Carnival has always extended far beyond Carnival Sunday.
The surrounding days bring together J’Ouvert, concerts, breakfast parties, beach fetes, boat rides and major Soca events attended by visitors from across the Caribbean diaspora.
Rise Miami Meets Shine New York captured that side of the weekend — thousands of people gathering outside the official Carnival route for an experience that had become part of the Miami Carnival tradition in its own right.
From the Julianspromos Archives
Rise Miami Meets Shine New York 2013 holds a particular place in the Julianspromos archive because it marked our first time covering Shine during Miami Carnival.
At the time, Shine had established itself as one of the must-go events of Miami Carnival weekend. For Soca fans traveling to South Florida, it had become part of the wider Carnival experience alongside J’Ouvert, the road and the weekend’s other major fetes.
Covering Shine therefore represented more than adding another party to the archive. It placed Julianspromos inside one of the events that people were actively talking about, planning around and traveling to experience during Miami Carnival.
It also came during a period when Julianspromos was expanding beyond its New York base and documenting Caribbean culture wherever major Carnival audiences were gathering.
The surviving video and photo coverage from Rise Meets Shine now preserves that first Julianspromos experience at Shine and another snapshot of the Caribbean party circuit during the early 2010s — when Miami Carnival weekend was becoming an increasingly international meeting point for artists, DJs, promoters and Soca fans.
