On Saturday, October 12, 2013, Julianspromos joined Canboulay’s Savages of Dawn during Miami Carnival J’Ouvert, documenting the paint, Soca and early-morning energy surrounding the band on the road.
The Miami appearance came only months after Julianspromos had documented Canboulay in New York, extending the story into another major Caribbean Carnival market during one of South Florida’s biggest weekends of the year.
Canboulay Takes to Miami Carnival J’Ouvert
Miami Carnival J’Ouvert brought together paint, powder, water, Soca and thousands of revelers for the traditional pre-Carnival celebration.
In 2013, Canboulay’s Savages of Dawn became part of that experience, taking the energy associated with Canboulay onto the Miami J’Ouvert road.
The surviving Julianspromos footage captures the crowd inside the experience rather than simply observing it from outside — with masqueraders covered in paint, music surrounding the band and the celebration unfolding throughout the morning.

The band’s presentation brought Canboulay’s paint-fete identity into the wider Miami Carnival weekend, where J’Ouvert serves as one of the most energetic celebrations leading into Carnival Sunday.

Vivaa Covers Canboulay in Miami
Sheniele “Vivaa” Dodson hosted the Julianspromos coverage from inside Miami Carnival J’Ouvert.
Her Miami appearance continued a particularly active year of on-camera work that included Carnival coverage, paint fetes, boat rides, concerts and other Caribbean events in both New York and Miami. Julianspromos’ surviving Canboulay history connects Vivaa directly with both the New York and Miami coverage from this period.
Rather than presenting the event from the sidelines, the footage places viewers among the masqueraders and captures the interaction, music and unpredictability that are part of the J’Ouvert experience.
From New York to Miami
Canboulay had already become part of the Julianspromos archive earlier in 2013.
On June 1, 2013, Julianspromos documented Canboulay in New York through both video and an extensive collection of original photography. Just over four months later, that coverage expanded to Miami Carnival J’Ouvert.
That New York-to-Miami progression also reflected a larger change taking place within Julianspromos.
After the company’s first Miami Carnival road experience in 2012, the following year brought more extensive coverage across the Miami Carnival weekend as the brand’s media presence continued expanding outside New York.

Canboulay Miami Carnival J’Ouvert 2013 preserves another important piece of Julianspromos’ expanding Carnival coverage during the early 2010s.
The New York Canboulay coverage earlier that year had combined original video with a substantial photo archive. Taking the coverage to Miami only months later connected that story to a second major Carnival market and added another chapter to Julianspromos’ growing presence outside New York.
The surviving footage now provides a direct look back at Savages of Dawn, Vivaa and the Canboulay experience on the Miami J’Ouvert road in 2013, while the larger Canboulay archive places that moment within the multi-year story.
