Sunny Side Up NY 2014: Labor Day Weekend Breakfast Party Highlights
On Sunday, August 31, 2014, Sunny Side Up brought its Trinidad breakfast-party flavor to Brooklyn for New York’s Labor Day Weekend.
From 10 AM to 4 PM, Pulse48 Yard became a daytime Soca fete as Carnival lovers gathered for music, food and another stop in a packed weekend of Caribbean events leading into the West Indian American Day Carnival.
Julianspromos was there to capture the party, with Chandelle “Chandy” De Riggs hosting the coverage, Intrigue Lane behind the camera and Julian C. Hackett editing the finished highlights.
Sunny Side Up Comes to New York
For anyone familiar with Trinidad Carnival, Sunny Side Up was already a familiar name.
The breakfast fete can be traced through Trinidad Carnival schedules to at least 2007, when it appeared as an all-inclusive breakfast party in Petit Valley. By 2014, Sunny Side Up remained part of the Carnival Sunday tradition, with Trinidad editions beginning around 4 AM as fete-goers partied from darkness into daylight.
New York gave that tradition its own Labor Day Weekend twist.
Instead of a pre-dawn start, Sunny Side Up NY ran from 10 AM until 4 PM, turning the breakfast-party concept into a daytime Brooklyn fete just one day before the massive Labor Day Carnival parade on Eastern Parkway.

The original Sunny Side Up NY flyers promised free breakfast for the first 300 patrons, keeping the breakfast-party identity front and center.

Chandelle “Chandy” De Riggs hosted the Julianspromos coverage from inside the event, bringing viewers into the party as the music and crowd moved around her.
Behind the camera was Intrigue Lane, capturing the atmosphere of the daytime fete.

From Trinidad Carnival to Brooklyn
What makes Sunny Side Up NY especially interesting in hindsight is the way the event connected two Carnival cities.
In Trinidad, Sunny Side Up had become associated with the early-morning Carnival Sunday breakfast-party tradition. Historical schedules show the event recurring over multiple Carnival seasons, including a 4 AM Sunny Side Up Breakfast Party during Trinidad Carnival 2014.
Six months later, the name appeared in Brooklyn during New York Carnival Weekend.
The time changed. The city changed. But the formula of Soca, food and Carnival people gathering together traveled with it.
It is one example of how Caribbean fete culture moves with the diaspora, taking traditions established in Trinidad and giving them another life in cities such as New York.

Sunny Side Up NY preserves another side of New York Carnival Weekend 2014.
The Julianspromos archive from this period was not limited to the major parade on Eastern Parkway. It was also documenting the fetes, artists, DJs, venues and personalities that surrounded Carnival and helped make Labor Day Weekend an entire Caribbean experience.
By 2014, Julianspromos coverage had expanded well beyond its early New York foundation into Caribbean events across multiple cities, while a growing team of hosts and contributors helped document more events on the ground.
For Sunny Side Up, Chandy represented Julianspromos on camera, Intrigue Lane captured the party and Julian C. Hackett completed the edit.
That surviving video now sits alongside the flyers as a record of what one Sunday afternoon in Brooklyn looked and sounded like during New York Carnival 2014.
