Toronto Caribbean Carnival 2014 Highlights

Julianspromos was on the road in Toronto for the 2014 Toronto Caribbean Carnival, capturing the Soca, mas and energy of one of North America’s largest celebrations of Caribbean culture.

The Grand Parade took place on Saturday, August 2, 2014, beginning inside Exhibition Place before moving west along Lake Shore Boulevard as masquerade bands brought elaborate costumes, music and Caribbean culture to the streets of Toronto.

For the 2014 road experience, Julian Hackett represented Julianspromos on media coverage with Louis Saldenah Mas-K Club, documenting the band’s presentation “River of Mirrors” from inside the Carnival.

On the Road With Saldenah

Louis Saldenah Mas-K Club brought River of Mirrors to Toronto Carnival with a large presentation made up of 15 individual costume sections.

The band’s sections were organized across five music trucks, each creating its own atmosphere as masqueraders moved through the parade.

The final music truck completed Saldenah’s River of Mirrors road presentation.

Together, the sections created a large visual interpretation of the band’s theme while several of Toronto’s established Soca DJs and music teams provided the soundtrack for the masqueraders.

Saldenah’s Carnival Legacy

By 2014, Louis Saldenah Mas-K Club had already established itself as one of the most successful and recognizable organizations in Toronto Carnival.

The original Julianspromos coverage noted that Saldenah entered the 2014 season as a 17-time previous Band of the Year winner, with the campaign surrounding River of Mirrors carrying the spirit of a “Quest for 18.”

The band’s long history and large-scale presentations made it an important part of Toronto’s Caribbean Carnival tradition and a natural choice for Julianspromos to document from inside the road experience.

On the Road with Tribal Carnival

Julianspromos’ 2014 Toronto Carnival coverage didn't stop with Saldenah Mas-K Club.

The team also went on the road with Tribal Carnival, led by Dexter Seusahai, as the band brought its 2014 presentation “Secret of the Wingz” to the Grand Parade. Contemporary Carnival records placed Tribal fifth in the parade order that year, alongside Toronto Revellers, Fantazia International, Saldenah, Carnival Nationz and the other competing bands.

For this part of the coverage, Julian Hackett filmed the action while Chandelle “Chandy” De Riggs hosted on the mic from inside the band, dressed in Tribal Carnival’s “Guardian Angles” costume section, as identified in the original Julianspromos video description.

The footage gives the Toronto story a different perspective from the Saldenah video. Rather than only watching the parade from outside, Chandy was costumed and moving with the masqueraders while helping bring viewers directly into the road experience.

“Secret of the Wingz”

Tribal Carnival's 2014 presentation was officially listed as “Secret of the Wingz.” Contemporary coverage of the band's launch documented nine sections built around the winged theme, including Fairytopia, The Guardian, Angel of Passion, Heavenly Bodies, Arch Angel, Angel of Lust, Angel of Secrets, Phoenix and Angel of Bliss.

The band wasn't just competitive in the adult parade. Tribal also had a strong showing at the 2014 Junior Carnival, including a Junior King victory for Malik Adams portraying Dragon Rider, while Caneisha Edwards placed third in Junior Queen portraying Guardian Angel.

That wider context helps show what viewers are seeing in the Julianspromos footage: a complete Carnival presentation that had already been unfolding through launch season and Junior Carnival before finally reaching the main Toronto road.

Toronto Caribbean Carnival 2014

The 2014 Grand Parade marked the 47th year of Toronto’s Caribbean Carnival tradition.

Masqueraders moved from Exhibition Place onto Lake Shore Boulevard in colorful costumes accompanied by Soca, Calypso and Caribbean music, while large crowds gathered along the route.

The parade served as the centerpiece of a multi-week festival celebrating the cultures of Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica and the wider Caribbean diaspora through mas, music, food and performing arts.

Original Julianspromos Coverage

Toronto Carnival 2014 forms part of an important period in Julianspromos’ multimedia history, when the company was increasingly documenting Carnival experiences beyond its New York base.

With Julian on the road capturing Saldenah’s River of Mirrors presentation, the footage preserved both the visual spectacle of the mas and a snapshot of Toronto’s Soca scene during the 2014 Carnival season.

That growing international Carnival coverage would expand considerably the following year with Julianspromos’ first formal Multimedia Carnival Tour in 2015.
