Toronto Jab Jab J’Ouvert 2014: Bunji Garlin, Fay-Ann Lyons & Soca Stars Take Over Carnival Friday
Toronto Carnival weekend came alive on Friday, August 1, 2014, as Jab Jab J’Ouvert Pt. 5 brought Soca, paint, powder, water and Caribbean J’Ouvert energy to the Wilson Outdoor Arena in Toronto, Ontario.
Promoted as “The Biggest Outdoor J’Ouvert,” the event assembled a major Caribbean lineup led by artists including Bunji Garlin, Fay-Ann Lyons, Iwer George, Skinny Fabulous, Tallpree, Lavaman and JW & Blaze.
The trip also represented an important milestone for Julianspromos: Toronto Carnival 2014 was the platform’s first-ever assignment in Toronto and its first coverage trip to Canada, expanding the archive beyond its established work in New York, Miami and other U.S. markets.
For the Julianspromos coverage, Chandelle “Chandy” De Riggs hosted on camera, while Julian C. Hackett shot and edited the footage.

The Biggest Outdoor J’Ouvert
J’Ouvert brings out a different side of Carnival.
Rather than the elaborate mas costumes associated with the main parade, J’Ouvert is about freedom, movement and getting dirty. Paint, powder, mud and water become part of the celebration as revelers move to Soca and Jab music.
The 2014 Toronto event leaned fully into that tradition.
Its promotion promised more Jab Jab, more paint, more mud, more water trucks and more powder, with an outdoor stage providing live entertainment throughout the celebration.
Held at Wilson Outdoor Arena, 1677 Wilson Avenue, the setting gave thousands of Carnival revelers room to experience a much more open and physical celebration than a typical indoor fete.
A Major Caribbean Artist Lineup
Jab Jab J’Ouvert Pt. 5 brought together performers from across the Caribbean during one of Toronto’s biggest Carnival weekends.
Bunji Garlin and Fay-Ann Lyons represented Trinidad and Tobago during a period when both artists were helping carry Soca to increasingly international audiences.
Iwer George brought the kind of high-energy Power Soca that naturally fits a J’Ouvert crowd.
From St. Vincent and the Grenadines came Skinny Fabulous, another artist closely associated with the fast-paced, road-ready side of Soca.
The lineup also featured performers with especially strong connections to Jab culture, including Tallpree and Lavaman.
Together, the bill captured several sides of Caribbean Carnival music in one Toronto setting.
Bunji Garlin & Fay-Ann Lyons in Toronto
By 2014, Bunji Garlin had entered a particularly important period in his career.
The success of “Differentology” had introduced his music to audiences far beyond the traditional Soca market, giving him growing visibility internationally while he remained firmly connected to Carnival.
Fay-Ann Lyons had already established herself as one of Soca’s leading performers, with a career that included major Carnival titles and an unmistakable stage presence.
Bringing both artists into Toronto during Carnival weekend reflected how important the Canadian celebration had become within the international Soca circuit.
Artists could move from Trinidad Carnival to New York, Miami, Toronto and other diaspora markets, carrying the music with them throughout the year.
Iwer George Brings Power Soca to J’Ouvert
Few settings suit Iwer George better than J’Ouvert.
His catalog and performance style have long been built around movement, audience participation and the kind of high-energy Power Soca designed for large crowds.
At Jab Jab J’Ouvert, that music met an audience already surrounded by paint, water and powder.
The stage and the crowd became part of the same celebration.
Grenadian Jab Culture Meets Toronto
The event’s Jab Jab identity gave the night another strong Caribbean connection.
Grenada’s Jab tradition has become one of the most recognizable expressions of J’Ouvert culture, influencing Carnival celebrations well beyond the island.
Tallpree, one of the artists most closely associated with Jab music internationally, brought that Grenadian energy into Toronto alongside Lavaman.
For members of the Caribbean diaspora, events like this provided more than a party.
They allowed traditions associated with the islands to be carried into a new city and reshaped through the experience of Toronto Carnival.
Chandy in the Middle of the Action
The Julianspromos coverage put Chandy directly inside the atmosphere of the event.
Rather than presenting Jab Jab J’Ouvert only as a series of stage performances, the coverage followed the people, energy and movement surrounding the night.
Chandy’s on-camera presence helped bring viewers into the celebration while Julian captured the performances and wider scene from behind the camera.
That combination gave audiences who were not in Toronto a closer look at what Carnival Friday actually felt like.

Carnival Friday Before the Grand Parade
Jab Jab J’Ouvert took place on Friday, August 1, setting the tone for one of the biggest weekends on Toronto’s Caribbean cultural calendar.
The following day, the focus shifted toward the main Carnival experience with mas bands, costumes and thousands of participants and spectators.
The contrast is part of what makes Carnival weekends so distinctive.
Friday offered paint, powder, water and J’Ouvert freedom.
Carnival Saturday brought a different visual experience through costumes and mas.
Together, they showed different sides of the same culture.
Toronto Becomes Part of the Julianspromos Story
The Toronto assignment opened a new geographic chapter for Julianspromos.
Before this trip, much of the platform’s growing Carnival and Caribbean entertainment archive had been built through New York, Miami and other U.S. assignments.
Toronto changed that.
For the first time, Julianspromos had traveled into Canada to document another major Caribbean Carnival market.
The city already had one of the largest and most established Caribbean communities in North America, making Toronto a natural next step as Julianspromos continued expanding its coverage.

Toronto Jab Jab J’Ouvert 2014 marked Julianspromos’ first-ever coverage assignment in Toronto and the platform’s first expansion into Canada.
By 2014, Julianspromos had already spent several years building its archive through events, interviews, Carnival coverage and performances in New York, Miami and other parts of the United States.
The Toronto trip pushed that work beyond the U.S. for the first time.
For this assignment, Chandelle “Chandy” De Riggs handled the on-camera coverage, moving through Jab Jab J’Ouvert and bringing viewers into the crowd, performances and Carnival Friday atmosphere.
Julian C. Hackett shot and edited the footage, documenting a lineup that included some of Soca’s most recognizable performers alongside artists closely connected to Jab culture.
The significance of Toronto went beyond one night.
It demonstrated that the Julianspromos coverage model — traveling to the event, documenting artists and audiences on location, and returning with original Caribbean media — could extend into another country and another major Carnival community.
It also widened the scope of the archive.
The progression was becoming increasingly clear: New York roots, expansion into Miami and other U.S. markets, and now Toronto and Canada.
Each new destination added another perspective on how Caribbean culture traveled beyond the islands.
Toronto showed how J’Ouvert, Soca and Carnival traditions were being celebrated by the Canadian diaspora while maintaining strong connections to Trinidad, Grenada, St. Vincent and the wider Caribbean.
Looking back, Toronto 2014 stands as an important geographic milestone in the Julianspromos story — the first Canadian assignment and another step toward the broader Carnival documentation that would continue in the years ahead.
