Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival 2015: On the Road With E-Nation
On Saturday, May 9, 2015, Nassau experienced something completely new.
The first Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival Road Fever sent costumed bands through the capital for a day of colour, Bahamian music, Soca and road energy as The Bahamas launched a new addition to its festival calendar.
Julianspromos joined E-Nation, a collaboration between Enigma and Eden Carnival, for the inaugural road experience.
With Julian C. Hackett filming from inside the mas and later editing the coverage, the cameras followed E-Nation through a historic first edition of Road Fever.
The First Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival
Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival was introduced in 2015 as a multi-day festival designed to combine distinctly Bahamian culture with elements of the wider Caribbean Carnival experience.
The Nassau weekend included JunkaMania, the Music Masters concert, Midnight Rush and Road Fever, giving audiences several different ways to experience Bahamian music and Carnival culture.
Road Fever became the big street finale.
Instead of watching performers from a stage, masqueraders could put on costumes, join a registered Carnival company and take the celebration directly onto Nassau’s streets.
Road Fever Takes Over Nassau
The first Road Fever parade began at the Thomas A. Robinson National Stadium and moved through Nassau before reaching the Western Esplanade and Da Cultural Village.
The approximately 5.6-mile route took some groups more than four hours to complete, with spectators lining the streets while masqueraders danced to a mix of Bahamian and Soca music.
Organizers had 28 locally owned groups or bands registered for the inaugural road competition.
For a first edition, it was an ambitious start.
On the Road With E-Nation
For Julianspromos, the road experience came with E-Nation.
E-Nation brought together Enigma and Eden Carnival, combining two Bahamian Carnival organizations for the inaugural Road Fever.
The original Julianspromos YouTube description identifies the coverage as being filmed directly with E-Nation during the first Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival, with Private Ryan and other DJs providing music on the road.
That put the camera where the real experience was happening — among the masqueraders rather than watching from the outside.
Feathers, Colour & Bahamian Carnival Style
Road Fever brought a different visual language to Nassau.
Feathered costumes.
Bright colours.
Music trucks.
Masqueraders moving through the afternoon heat.
The event borrowed familiar elements from Caribbean road Carnival while organizers also encouraged bands to incorporate indigenous Bahamian materials into their presentations. Awards were created for best overall group, best section costume and best use of indigenous materials.
That balance was central to the idea behind the new festival: creating something connected to regional Carnival culture without simply copying another island’s celebration.
A New Carnival Tradition Begins
The first Road Fever was not a small test run.
Hundreds of masqueraders participated, while large crowds gathered along the route to see the new event for themselves. Contemporary reporting described spectators watching the colourful bands dance through Nassau to both Bahamian music and Soca.
When the competition was over, Bahamas Masqueraders was announced as the overall winning band.
But the bigger story was that Road Fever had actually made it onto the streets.
For the first time, Nassau had a new costumed road parade operating alongside the country’s internationally recognized Junkanoo traditions.

Junkanoo Carnival Was Something New
Despite the name, Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival was not simply the traditional Boxing Day or New Year’s Day Junkanoo parade moved to May.
Road Fever was created as a costumed street party with Carnival bands, music trucks and masqueraders, while the wider festival also incorporated Bahamian forms such as Junkanoo music and Junkanoo-inspired performance through events including JunkaMania.
That distinction is important when looking back at 2015.
The Bahamas already had one of the Caribbean’s most recognizable street traditions.
Junkanoo Carnival was an attempt to build something additional around it.
From the Julianspromos Archives
The May 2015 trip marked Julianspromos’ first-ever time in The Bahamas.
It came during an unusually active stretch of international Carnival coverage.
Only weeks earlier, Julianspromos had documented Jamaica Carnival.
Then came the brand’s first St. Maarten trip.
Days later, the first Cayman Islands trip brought the cameras to Batabano.
And now Nassau became another new destination.
The timing made the Bahamas assignment particularly interesting because Julianspromos was not arriving to document a long-established Carnival tradition.
The cameras were there for year one.
Julian C. Hackett joined E-Nation on the road, filming from inside the mas as Nassau experienced its first Road Fever parade. He then edited that footage into the Julianspromos highlights released three days later.
That combination makes the May 9 coverage significant from both sides of the archive.
It was the first Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival.
And it was Julianspromos’ first time in The Bahamas.
Two beginnings captured on the same road.
