Miami Carnival 2015: Freaks Mas on the Road at Miami-Dade Fairgrounds
Feathers, color and Soca filled the Miami-Dade Fairgrounds on Sunday, October 11, 2015, as masqueraders took to the road for the Miami Carnival Parade of Bands.
For the 2015 road experience, Freaks Mas returned with “A Journey Through the Caribbean,” bringing another colorful presentation into a Carnival that featured 19 adult mas bands from across South Florida and the wider Caribbean community.
Sheniele “Vivaa” Dodson and Intrigue Lane were on the road with Freaks Mas, moving through the band as the costumes, masqueraders and music of Miami Carnival unfolded around them.
On the Road With Freaks Mas
Freaks Mas brought “A Journey Through the Caribbean” to the 2015 Parade of Bands, continuing the band’s presence on the Miami Carnival road.
Rather than experiencing the parade from the sidelines, Vivaa and Intrigue moved within Freaks Mas, surrounded by masqueraders as the band made its way through the Miami-Dade Fairgrounds.
The road was where the costumes fully came alive.
Feathers moved with the masqueraders, Soca rolled across the Fairgrounds and each section became part of a much larger presentation moving toward the judging point.
Freaks ultimately placed sixth in the 2015 Band of the Year competition, earning 245 points for A Journey Through the Caribbean.
Another Miami Carnival With Freaks
Freaks Mas had already become a familiar part of Julianspromos’ Miami Carnival coverage by 2015.
The relationship stretched back to 2012, when Julianspromos first traveled beyond New York Carnival and joined Freaks NY / Natural Freaks for its “RIO” presentation in Miami. The road coverage continued with Freaks in 2013 and again in 2014, when the band presented “Alter Ego.”
By 2015, Vivaa and Intrigue were once again inside the Freaks Mas experience for another Miami Carnival.

19 Bands Bring Their Presentations to the Fairgrounds
Freaks Mas was part of a large field of bands competing that Sunday.
The official 2015 roster included Bajan Fuh Eva, Breakaway Kru, D-Junction Mas, Euphoria Productions, Freaks, Fusion Carnival, Fun Generation, Generation-X, Island Gems, Jamboree Mas, Major Players, Mascots International, One Island Band, Party Room Squad, Radikal International, Revel Nation Carnival, The Carnival Republic, Ti Chapo and Wassi Ones.
Their themes ranged from Euphoria Productions’ “Uncaged” and Generation-X’s “The Spirit of Carnival” to Fusion Carnival’s “Welcome to Africa,” One Island’s “A Novel Idea” and Freaks’ A Journey Through the Caribbean.
The variety meant that every band entering the judging area brought an entirely different visual world onto the road.
Full Mas Under the Miami Sun
The Parade of Bands was the polished side of Miami Carnival weekend.
Masqueraders wore full costumes built around feathers, beads, gems, body pieces and individual section designs. DJs and music trucks carried Soca through the route while each band worked to turn its theme into a complete moving presentation.
For Freaks Mas, A Journey Through the Caribbean fit naturally into that atmosphere, using the road to celebrate the region through Carnival.
From J’Ouvert to Full Mas
The previous morning had offered a completely different Carnival experience.
On Saturday, October 10, the official Miami Carnival J’Ouvert filled Central Broward Regional Park with paint, water and Soca before Sunday shifted the focus to full costumes and the Parade of Bands.

The contrast is part of what makes Carnival weekend work: Saturday belonged to paint and J’Ouvert, while Sunday belonged to feathers and mas.
One Island Takes Band of the Year
Competition remained an important part of the parade.
One Island Band captured the 2015 adult Band of the Year title with “A Novel Idea,” scoring 273 points. Euphoria Mas followed with Uncaged, while Generation X placed third with The Spirit of Carnival. Freaks finished sixth with A Journey Through the Caribbean.
The results reflected the scale of the competition, with bands judged on presentations that had taken months of design and preparation before reaching the road.
