Toronto Carnival 2015: Saldenah Brings “The Chronicles of Machel Montano” to the Road
Toronto’s waterfront exploded with feathers, Soca and thousands of masqueraders on Saturday, August 1, 2015, as the Toronto Caribbean Carnival Grand Parade took over Exhibition Place and the Lake Shore area.
For Louis Saldenah’s Mas-K Club, 2015 was more than another Carnival theme. The band built an entire presentation around the music and career of Machel Montano, turning songs and moments from one of Soca’s biggest catalogs into costumes under the title “The Chronicles of Machel Montano.”
By the time the band reached the road, what had started months earlier as a 17-section costume presentation had become a full Carnival experience — with Machel himself joining the celebration and Saldenah’s masqueraders bringing the concept to life in front of Toronto.
Before the Road: Saldenah Unveils the Chronicles
The story began months before Carnival.
On Friday, April 17, 2015, Louis Saldenah Mas-K Club unveiled “The Chronicles of Machel Montano” at Chadni Grand, 3895 McNicoll Avenue at Morningside in Scarborough.
The original promotional artwork billed Saldenah as a 17-time Band of the Year winner and placed Machel Montano front and center in the campaign.

Contemporary coverage described a packed launch, with patrons gathering to see 17 costume sections built around Machel’s career and music.
Instead of presenting one broad fantasy world, Saldenah could pull inspiration from decades of Soca.
Each section became another chapter.
Seventeen Sections, One Soca Story
The fun of the concept was recognizing how Machel’s music could be turned into mas.
Sections drew their identities from songs and moments associated with his career. Among them were “Big Phat Fish” and the highly anticipated “Like Ah Boss” section, connecting Carnival costumes directly to songs masqueraders already knew from the road and fete.
“Like Ah Boss” carried another notable connection.
Its costumes were designed by Anya Ayoung-Chee, extending the collaboration between Machel, fashion and Carnival beyond Trinidad and into Toronto’s mas scene.
What looked like individual costume sections at the April launch would eventually become one enormous moving tribute.
Machel Joins Saldenah on the Road
The theme was not simply a tribute created from a distance.
Machel collaborated with Saldenah for the 2015 Carnival presentation and joined the Toronto celebration himself. Contemporary reporting ahead of the parade highlighted the partnership between Machel Montano, Louis Saldenah and Anya Ayoung-Chee, while post-Carnival coverage showed Machel on the road with Saldenah’s masqueraders.
That gave The Chronicles of Machel Montano an extra layer.
The artist whose music inspired the mas was now inside the Carnival experience built around his own career.
Toronto’s Grand Parade
The official Grand Parade took place on August 1, 2015, moving through Exhibition Place, Marilyn Bell Parkway and the waterfront Carnival zone. Toronto records scheduled the parade from late morning into the evening.
Saldenah entered the parade as one of Toronto’s major mas organizations, with bright costumes, large sections and Soca driving the band through the route.
The surviving footage captures exactly what made Toronto Carnival feel different from a band launch months earlier.
Costumes that had once been carefully modeled under indoor lights were now moving through daylight, surrounded by music trucks, flags, spectators and thousands of masqueraders.
How “The Chronicles” Finished
When the 2015 Band of the Year results were released, Louis Saldenah Mas-K Club placed third in the Large Band category with The Chronicles of Machel Montano, behind Carnival Nationz and Toronto Revellers.
The result became another entry in the long competitive history of a band that had already accumulated 17 Band of the Year victories before the season began.

Toronto Carnival 2015 marked Julianspromos’ second consecutive year documenting Carnival in Toronto, following the company’s first expansion into Canada in 2014.
For the 2015 Grand Parade, Julianspromos joined Louis Saldenah’s Mas-K Club on the road.
