GBM Showcase Brooklyn 2014: Destra, Ravi B, Lyrikal & More at SRB

Brooklyn’s Soca scene came together on Friday, March 21, 2014, when Team GBM presented the GBM Showcase — “The After Carnival Spectacular Event” — at SRB Nightclub in Brooklyn.

The lineup featured GBM Nutron, Ravi B, Destra Garcia, Jaiga, Shal Marshall and Lyrikal, bringing together established Soca stars and artists whose careers would continue growing well beyond the 2014 season. The official flyer also billed a packed DJ and sound lineup, giving the night the feel of a full post-Carnival celebration rather than a standard concert.

An After-Carnival Soca Showcase in Brooklyn

The timing was perfect.

Trinidad Carnival had wrapped only weeks earlier, leaving New York’s Soca audience still carrying the energy of the season. The GBM Showcase gave fans a chance to reconnect with that atmosphere in Brooklyn through a lineup that represented several different sides of Trinidad and Tobago’s music scene.

The flyer branded the event as “The After Carnival Spectacular Event,” which fit the mood of a night designed to keep the Carnival season going a little longer.

Destra Garcia Brings Star Power

Destra Garcia brought one of Soca’s most recognizable voices to the showcase.

Already firmly established as an international Caribbean performer, Destra gave the lineup major star power while sharing the bill with artists who were continuing to build their profiles in New York and across the wider Soca circuit.

Her presence helped elevate the GBM Showcase beyond a typical club event and gave fans a chance to see one of Soca’s leading performers in an intimate Brooklyn setting.

Ravi B Adds Chutney Soca to the Mix

Ravi B added another layer to the night through Chutney Soca.

His inclusion reflected the musical variety of Trinidad and Tobago’s Carnival culture, where Soca and Chutney Soca often share the same spaces and audiences.

That mix gave the showcase a broader sound while keeping the event rooted in the music of the Caribbean.

The lineup also featured GBM Nutron, Lyrikal, Jaiga and Shal Marshall, creating a strong cross-section of artists connected to the modern Soca scene.

Looking back, the combination is especially interesting because several of these performers would continue becoming increasingly important names in Soca after 2014.

GBM Nutron’s presence also connected the event directly to the wider GBM movement, while artists such as Lyrikal and Shal Marshall continued building their own strong followings in the years that followed.

DJs and Sounds Keep the Night Moving

The live artists were only part of the event.

The official flyer also advertised GBM Sounds, Supreme Team, Platinum Sounds, DJ Spice, Hyper Active Sounds, DJ Trixta, Young Chow, Crazy Beenie and Notorious, giving the event a deep DJ and sound-system lineup around the live performances.

That format was familiar to Caribbean nightlife in New York: artists delivered featured performances while DJs and sounds kept the room moving between sets and into the early morning.

Inside SRB Brooklyn

The event took place at SRB Nightclub in Brooklyn, located at 2nd Avenue and 14th Street.

The venue had become a popular home for live music and Caribbean events, and its size made it well suited for showcases where the crowd could remain close to the performers.

Doors opened at 9:00 PM, with the live show scheduled for midnight, according to the original event flyer.

A Showcase That Continued Growing

The GBM Showcase was not a one-off idea.

That continuity gives the surviving footage added value today. Instead of preserving only a single event, the archive shows how the showcase developed across different seasons and how the artists, presentation and atmosphere evolved.

The 2014 GBM Showcase represents another stage in Julianspromos’ growing Caribbean event coverage.

By this point, Julianspromos was documenting more than isolated concerts and interviews. Recurring showcases, Carnival events, mas-band presentations and Caribbean nightlife were beginning to form a connected historical record.

The 2013 GBM Showcase had included hosted artist interviews and individual performance coverage. For the 2014 edition, Julian C. Hackett shot and edited the event without an on-camera host, allowing the finished video to focus directly on the artists and crowd.

That year-to-year coverage is an important part of what makes the archive valuable today. It shows not just who performed, but how events, artists and Caribbean nightlife in New York developed over time.

More than a decade later, the 2014 video and photo gallery preserve another chapter of Brooklyn’s Soca scene and the wider growth of the Julianspromos multimedia archive.
