Shine Hollywood 2016: One Last Fete Above Hollywood Boulevard
After a full weekend of mas, music and Caribbean culture in Los Angeles, Hollywood Carnival 2016 still had one more party left.
On Sunday, June 26, 2016, the Carnival crowd headed to OHM Nightclub at 6801 Hollywood Boulevard for Shine, the official Sunday day party and one of the final events of Hollywood Carnival weekend.
Running from 11 AM to 5 PM, Shine traded Saturday’s feathers and three-mile parade route for an upscale nightclub setting overlooking the same Hollywood district Carnival had taken over the day before. Contemporary coverage described it as the weekend’s “last lap” party, returning to OHM after a successful 2015 edition.
For Julianspromos, Sheniele “Vivaa” Dodson was back on the microphone, moving through the party, talking with guests and capturing the atmosphere while Julian C. Hackett documented the event.
From Carnival Road to Hollywood Rooftop
Less than 24 hours earlier, thousands of masqueraders had filled Hollywood Boulevard for the Hollywood Carnival Parade of the Bands.
Sunday felt completely different.
Shine brought the crowd indoors and onto OHM’s Hollywood setting, replacing costumes and road trucks with stylish partygoers, cocktails, DJs and a more polished daytime atmosphere.
The energy, however, never disappeared.
Guests arrived dressed for the final fete of the weekend, creating a crowd that felt fashionable without becoming stiff. People danced, laughed, mixed with visitors from across the Caribbean and enjoyed one more afternoon together before Hollywood Carnival officially came to a close.
The party quickly filled.
By 3 PM, OHM had reached capacity, and contemporary reports noted that no additional guests were being admitted. Although Shine was advertised to finish at 5 PM, the party continued beyond its scheduled ending.
Vivaa Works the Crowd
Shine gave Vivaa a different kind of environment from the Carnival road.
Instead of interviewing artists backstage or moving through a mas band, she could walk directly into the crowd and talk with the people who had traveled to Los Angeles for the weekend.
She spoke with attendees about the party, Hollywood Carnival and their experience in California, while also capturing the spontaneous personalities that make a fete memorable.
The conversations became part of the atmosphere rather than separate formal interviews.
Around her, people were dancing, posing for photos, laughing with friends and enjoying the final hours of the Carnival weekend.
Soca Inside, Reggae Outside
Music was at the center of Shine.
The DJ lineup included Supa Roy, Dr. Jay, DJ Stephen and Private Ryan, bringing different styles of Caribbean party music into the same venue.
As the afternoon developed, the party evolved into a playful musical battle.
Private Ryan controlled the inside while Supa Roy worked outside, with the two spaces moving between Soca and Reggae. Contemporary coverage described the DJs alternating genres as the crowd moved between the different areas of OHM.
That setup gave Shine more than one personality.
One section could be deep in a Soca run while another shifted toward Reggae and Dancehall, allowing the party to reflect the broader Caribbean audience that Hollywood Carnival had attracted throughout the weekend.
DJ Stephen was also part of the 2016 Carnival weekend soundtrack, with records such as Fadda Fox’s “Ducking” among the songs generating strong crowd reactions during the festivities.
Machel Montano Among the People
Machel Montano had been one of the most visible Caribbean figures throughout Hollywood Carnival weekend.
Rather than limiting himself to a single headline performance, he moved through events, appeared with artists and maintained a close connection to the people participating in the Carnival. Contemporary reporting described him as an ambassador and host throughout the weekend.
At Shine, that continued in a much more relaxed way.
Machel was hanging out among the people, sharing the party rather than separating himself from it.
That accessibility fit the mood of the afternoon.
Shine was not built around watching a distant stage. It was about being inside the same space together — artists, DJs, masqueraders, visitors and Carnival regulars all winding down the weekend in one party.
An Upscale Last Lap
Shine had a different visual identity from the road events that came before it.
The crowd was well dressed, upbeat and ready to fete, giving the afternoon a more upscale feel without losing the looseness of a Caribbean party.
OHM’s location in the heart of Hollywood added to that atmosphere. The venue sat directly in the district that had become the center of Carnival activities throughout the weekend, allowing guests to look out over a neighborhood that had been filled with masqueraders just one day earlier.
The setting helped make Shine feel less like an unrelated Sunday party and more like the closing chapter of the same Carnival story.
Saturday belonged to costumes and Hollywood Boulevard.
Sunday belonged to good clothes, drinks, DJs and one last wine.
Shine Becomes a Hollywood Carnival Tradition
Shine had already proven itself the year before.
In 2015, Julianspromos followed Hollywood Carnival weekend into OHM Nightclub for the first Shine Hollywood coverage. The 2016 edition returned to the same venue and attracted an even larger crowd, eventually reaching capacity during the afternoon.
By then, Shine was becoming one of the recognizable events attached to the Hollywood Carnival experience.
It also gave visitors something many Carnival weekends understand instinctively: after the road is finished, everybody still needs somewhere to go.
A Final Chapter to Hollywood Carnival 2016
Hollywood Carnival 2016 had stretched across four days, from June 23 through June 26, with parties, cultural events, the Parade of the Bands and the Carnival Culture Village spread across Los Angeles.
Shine provided the Sunday conclusion.
There were no large costume sections to judge and no three-mile parade route to complete.
Just music, people and the feeling that nobody was quite ready for the weekend to finish.
For the guests packed into OHM, that was enough.
