Swanky International Unveils “Desire” for Cayman Carnival 2016
Paradise, passion, royalty, lust and temptation took over Grand Cayman on Friday, January 8, 2016, when Swanky International unveiled “Desire,” its new costume presentation for the upcoming Cayman Carnival season.
Held at Festival Green in Camana Bay, the Costume Band Launch Spectacular transformed the space into a Carnival runway as models revealed the elaborate designs section by section. The event ran from 8 PM to 10 PM and was presented by the West Indies Wine Company.
For Swanky, Desire arrived at a moment when the band had already established itself as a major force in Cayman mas. For Julianspromos, the launch offered an early look at the costumes, designers and ideas shaping the island’s 2016 Carnival season.
Welcome to “Desire”
The theme gave Swanky’s designers a wide canvas.
Rather than building every costume around a single visual world, Desire explored the things people want, chase and fantasize about — from paradise and luxury to romance, speed, indulgence and attraction.
The presentation included sections and concepts such as:
Automotive Art — Paradise and Fast Lane
Digicel — Passion
Chocolat
Royalty & Crown Jewels
Fetish & Hedonism
Rose
Jam Down
Swanky Desired
That range allowed the collection to move between completely different moods while still remaining connected by one idea: desire.
Passion Takes the Stage
One of the prominent sections was Digicel’s “Passion.”
Local Cayman coverage following the launch featured model Astrid in the Passion costume, confirming the design as part of Swanky’s 2016 collection.
Like the wider presentation, Passion leaned heavily into color, feathers, bodywear and the kind of dramatic costume construction designed to look completely different once hundreds of masqueraders began moving together on the road.
Lust, Sex Appeal and Jinxed
Several individual designs pushed the Desire concept even further.
LUST, designed by Aneeca Seymour, appeared in black and blue.
Sex Appeal, designed by Claude Desir, was presented in green.
The red JINXED costume was designed by Jodie Henriques.
The names made Swanky’s intentions clear. Desire was not being treated as an abstract theme. The designers were openly playing with attraction, temptation, sensuality and fantasy.
The wider creative direction was overseen by Devika Singh, who became closely associated with Swanky’s costume design operation.

From Passion and Paradise to Lust, Sex Appeal, Royalty and Hedonism, Swanky International’s Desire presentation gave its designers room to interpret attraction and fantasy in dramatically different ways.
The photographs below capture the costumes as they were unveiled at Festival Green, Camana Bay on January 8, 2016, before the 2016 Cayman Carnival season moved onto the road.
From a Cayman Idea to a Major Mas Band
Swanky International’s story had begun almost a decade earlier.
The band made its first appearance in the 2007 Batabano parade, created by Craig “Festa” Frederick after his experiences attending Miami Carnival while studying in Tampa inspired him to bring a different kind of mas-band experience back to the Cayman Islands.
Even the name carried a Cayman connection.
Frederick recalled that Christen Suckoo suggested “Swanky,” referencing the traditional Cayman drink made with fresh lime and brown sugar.
The band grew quickly.
By Cayman Carnival Batabano 2015, Swanky had become the largest band on the road, and Julianspromos had experienced that growth firsthand during its first Cayman Carnival trip, joining Swanky for the “Kaleidoscope... Out of Many Colours” presentation.

More Than Costumes
Frederick’s vision for Swanky extended beyond what masqueraders wore.
The aim was to create a complete road experience built around music, drinks, togetherness and Carnival energy, while also attracting increasing numbers of international masqueraders to Grand Cayman.
That international outlook helped distinguish Swanky as it grew.
The costumes could get someone’s attention.
The experience was what the band wanted them to remember.
A Turning Point for Cayman Carnival
When Desire was unveiled in January, Swanky was still being publicly promoted as part of the upcoming Cayman Carnival Batabano season. Contemporary coverage described the costumes specifically in that context.
But 2016 would become a turning point.
Later that year, Swanky International and Batabano separated, beginning the split that led to the development of CayMAS as a separate Carnival organization and road experience in Grand Cayman. Cayman government reporting later identified 2016 as the year of the Batabano–Swanky split.
That makes the Desire launch more than simply another band launch.
It captures Swanky at the end of one chapter and just before the beginning of another.
When Swanky Showed Cayman What It Desired
By January 2016, Swanky International was no longer an emerging band trying to establish its identity.
It had nearly a decade of history behind it, had become the largest band on the Cayman road the previous year, and was entering a Carnival season that would ultimately reshape the island’s mas landscape.
Desire gave its designers room to explore Paradise, Passion, Royalty, Fetish, Lust, Sex Appeal and more, all inside one unapologetically bold presentation.
Before the costumes reached the road, the story began under the lights at Camana Bay.
From the Julianspromos Archives
Julianspromos documented Swanky International’s “Desire” Costume Band Launch Spectacular on January 8, 2016 at Festival Green, Camana Bay in Grand Cayman.
The original footage was shot and edited by Julian C. Hackett.
The finished video, “Swanky International ‘Desire’ Cayman Carnival 2016,” was uploaded to the Julianspromos YouTube channel on January 12, 2016.
The coverage followed Julianspromos’ first Cayman Carnival trip in 2015 and continued the archive’s documentation of Swanky International during a period when the band was becoming one of the most influential forces in Cayman mas.
